3/28/2024 5:13:00 PM | Softball
NOTE: Due to impending rain in San Luis Obispo County, the start time for Friday's series finale with UC Santa Barbara has been moved to 11 a.m.
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Trailing UC Santa Barbara three times during Thursday afternoon's series and doubleheader opener, the Cal Poly softball program equalized on three occasions before overtaking the Gauchos in the bottom of fourth and finishing with a 10-6 victory. Big West leader Cal Poly then completed the doubleheader sweep with a 4-3, 10-inning win in game No. 2 as a bases-loaded grounder from senior Juju Sargent – combined with a Gauchos fielding error – contributed to the walk-off decision.
During Thursday's opening 10-6 victory, UC Santa Barbara scored once in the top of the first and twice during the third with Cal Poly equalizing both times.
UC Santa Barbara (10-19, 4-4) then moved ahead 4-3 during the top of the fourth with shortstop Madelyn McNally first tagging up to third base following a foul out by first baseman Ashley Donaldson before scoring through a Cal Poly throwing error.
The Mustangs (17-10, 7-1), however, surged into a 5-4 lead in the bottom half. After senior right fielder Juju Sargent and sophomore left fielder Kiara Blanchard enjoyed successive one-out singles, senior designated player Mia Perez drew a four-pitch walk before sophomore third baseman Mylina Garza delivered a run-scoring single. Two batters later, Gauchos reliever Emily McCoskey struck junior first baseman Malia Mah to force home Perez for the 5-4 edge.
Taking over for Mustang sophomore starter Sophia Ramuno (7-5) to begin the fifth, junior righthander Paige Maier kept UC Santa Barbara to just one hit between the fifth and sixth innings. Cal Poly then furthered the advantage to 6-4 in the bottom half of the fifth, placing runners at the corner bases with two down before Perez singled to left field to score junior Jessica Clements.
Cal Poly padded the lead with a four-run six inning highlighted by a two-run single from senior shortstop Xiara Diaz.
During Thursday's second win – a 4-3, 10-inning triumph – UC Santa Barbara once more opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first inning before Cal Poly received run-scoring hits from Diaz, Sargent and Perez in the bottom half to take a 3-1 lead.
Handed the lead, Mustang starting junior righthander Kate Judy – who earned the save in game No. 1 – retired the Gauchos in order during the second and stranded two in the third. UC Santa Barbara grabbed a run back in the fourth with a fielder's choice from McNally bringing home third baseman Emily Carr.
With Cal Poly stranding 13 baserunners for the second straight matchup, UC Santa Barbara opened the seventh with successive doubles as designated player Ainsley Waddell led off before Donaldson followed with a run-scoring shot to left center.
Cal Poly left one on to close the regulation innings and then all three to end the eighth after loading the bags with one down.
Ramuno, however, took over for Judy with one down in the top of the seventh and struck out six in three and two-thirds innings to retain the 3-3 deadlock.
Into the bottom of the 10th, freshman third baseman Sehren Martinez reached on a Gauchos fielding error with one down before UC Santa Barbara elected to intentionally walk Clements. A Diaz single loaded the bases before Sargent grounded to second baseman Jazzy Santos, whose mishandling of the ball allowed Martinez to score the decisive run.
