SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno struck out eight and senior shortstop Xiara Diaz (above) struck the decisive blow in the bottom of the sixth inning, singling home junior center fielder Jessica Clements as the Cal Poly softball program closed a three-game series against UC Riverside with a 1-0 triumph Sunday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field.
Limited to just two hits through the initial five innings by UC Riverside starting righthander Maddie Heinlin (2-6), Cal Poly produced Sunday's lone run after Clements singled with one down before stealing second. Two pitches later, Diaz singled up the middle to bring home Clements.
Ramuno (5-5) kept UC Riverside to just three hits and without a baserunner past second until the fifth, when the Highlanders utilized a Cal Poly fielding error, a walk and a single to load the bases with two down. Ramuno, however, induced a pop up from catcher Jackie Alday to keep the matchup scoreless.
Handed the lead after six innings, Ramuno retired UC Riverside in order during the top of the seventh to finalize her second shutout of the season.
Clements finished with two of Cal Poly's four hits Sunday to bring her Big West-leading batting average to .511 (45-for-88).
Cal Poly (15-10, 5-1) concludes a six-game home stand when welcoming UC Santa Barbara for a three-game, March 29-30 set. The series gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, March 29.
