Mustangs Walk Off against UC Riverside to Split Saturday Pair

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno matched a career best with 10 strikeouts during the Cal Poly softball program's Saturday doubleheader and series opener against UC Riverside, but the Highlanders found the decisive run in the top of the 10th inning to edge the Mustangs, 4-3. Cal Poly, however, captured game No. 2 with junior second baseman Mia Perez's (above) walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh scoring senior right fielder Juju Sargent for a 5-4 victory.
During Saturday's opening 4-3, 10-inning setback – Cal Poly's lengthiest game since an 11-inning loss at CSUN on April 19, 2019 – UC Riverside broke an early scoreless deadlock with a three-run third inning.
Held to just two hits through the opening three innings by Highlanders starting righthander Briza Blanco, Cal Poly (14-10, 4-1) tied the matchup during the bottom of the fourth. With junior Juju Sargent leading off with a bunt single and sophomore Kiara Blanchard following with a four-pitch walk, junior designated player Mia Perez delivered a run-scoring single down the right field line. Senior second baseman Kenny Litana followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Blanchard before Garza scored freshman pinch runner Sehren Martinez with a two-out single through the left side of the infield.
After conceding UC Riverside's initial three runs, Ramuno (4-5) retired 15 straight Highlanders between the fifth and ninth innings and struck out the Highlander side in the sixth to help sustain the deadlock.
With Cal Poly stranding 12 total baserunners and twice having the would-be decisive run thrown out at home plate, UC Riverside surged ahead in the top of the 10th as first baseman Zara Wasserman doubled home designated player Kamryn Davis with two down.
The Mustangs, meanwhile, stranded one final baserunner during the bottom of the 10th to end the matchup.
Perez led Cal Poly with three hits in Saturday's opener.
During Saturday's second matchup – a 5-4 win – Cal Poly grabbed a 2-0 lead at the first opportunity as Perez singled to left center to plate senior shortstop Xiara Diaz and junior center fielder Jessica Clements.
An inning later, Clements belted her second home run of the season over the right field wall to bring home junior first baseman Malia Mah and further the advantage to 4-0.
In the circle for Cal Poly, starting righthander Paige Maier allowed solitary UC Riverside runs in the third and fifth innings, scattering seven hits before giving way to fellow junior Kate Judy (5-4), who struck out a pair in two innings before earning the victory through Perez's walk-off effort.
UC Riverside, however, first equalized in the top of the seventh through catcher Jackie Alday, who delivered a two-out, two-run single to left center that brought home left fielder Nadia Witt and center fielder Lauryn Garewal for a 4-4 scoreline.
Cal Poly though found the decisive run at the first chance as Perez followed successive one-out singles by Sargent and Blanchard with the walk-off base hit to left field.
