NORTHRIDGE – Sophomore righthander Sophia Ramuno (above) matched a career high with 10 strikeouts as the Cal Poly softball program completed a Big West-opening sweep for the first time since 2008 with a 2-0 victory Sunday afternoon at CSUN.
Stranding baserunners in each of the first two innings, Cal Poly (13-9, 3-0) produced Sunday's first run during the top of the third. With junior first baseman Malia Mah hit by a pitch to start the inning and freshman Sehren Martinez on to run, junior center fielder Clements singled ahead of a groundout from senior shortstop Xiara Diaz. With both Mustangs in scoring position, senior right fielder Juju Sargent plated Martinez with a sacrifice fly to center fielder.
Ramuno, who also struck out 10 as a freshman last season at UC Riverside, conceded three of her six hits during the opening four innings, but failed to let a Matadors baserunner past second.
CSUN, however, loaded the bases during the bottom of the fifth with two outs and none on after Ramuno hit third baseman Shaylan Whatman, designated player Lulu Sanchez singled and left fielder Mikayla Carman drew a four-pitch walk. Ramuno though struck out right fielder Kaylee Escutia to strand the bases loaded.
Cal Poly added its second run during the top half of the seventh, Sargent drawing a five-pitch, bases-loaded walk to force home junior pinch runner Caroline Allman.
The Matadors loaded the bases once more with two down in the bottom of the seventh, but Ramuno struck out Escutia once again to complete the shutout.
With a 3-for-3 effort, Clements remained the Big West's top hitter, improving her season batting average to .532 (41-for-77).
After playing its first 22 games away from home, Cal Poly begins a 12-game slate inside Bob Janssen Field when hosting UC Riverside March 23-24. The three-game set gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, March 23.
