Cal Poly Opens 50th Year at Feb. 9-11 NorCal Kickoff

SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly softball program opens its 50th varsity season and a 47-game regular season schedule at the Feb. 9-11 NorCal Kickoff, co-hosted by Sacramento State and UC Davis. Cal Poly, returning starters at all 10 positions and welcoming back all three All-Big West selections from a year ago, opens the 2024 season on Friday, Feb. 9 against San Jose State (9:30 a.m.) and Sacramento State (12 noon). The Mustangs conclude action at Sacramento State's Shea Stadium on Saturday, Feb. 10 against Middle Tennessee at 9:30 a.m. before shifting action to UC Davis for a 2:30 p.m. matchup against Saint Mary's. Cal Poly concludes the first of its four non-conference tournaments with a Sunday, Feb. 11 re-match with Saint Mary's at 12 noon.

CAL POLY VERSUS NORCAL KICKOFF OPPONENTS: Cal Poly's series slide against San Jose State was furthered to six successive setbacks following an 11-6 loss on March 5, 2023. San Jose State leads the all-time series, 15-13 … Cal Poly has won five of the last eight matchups with Sacramento State since 2013, through the Hornets have prevailed in the last two meetings, most recently edging the Mustangs, 6-5, on Feb. 26, 2022. Cal Poly leads the all-time series, 43-39, dating to the first matchup on April 30, 1976 … Cal Poly holds a 3-1 all-time series record versus Middle Tennessee, with the Blue Raiders prevailing for the first time on Feb. 12, 2022, 4-3. Cal Poly last defeated Middle Tennessee on Feb. 9, 2018 with a 6-5 decision at UCLA … Cal Poly improved its all-time series lead versus Saint Mary's to 37-4, last delivering a three-game home sweep, March 6-7, 2021.
CLEMENTS BEGINS JUNIOR YEAR IN HISTORIC POSITION: Halfway through her collegiate career, junior outfielder Jessica Clements – already two-time NFCA All-Region and All-Big West honoree – enter the 2024 season as the leading hitter in program history with a .370 (51-for-138) career mark. Cal Poly's leadoff hitter in all 90 games since the start of the 2022 season, Clements was named to the All-Big West Preseason Coaches' Team Monday.
CAL POLY SELECTED SEVENTH IN BIG WEST POLL: Despite returning starters at all 10 positions and welcoming back all three All-Big West selections from 2023, Cal Poly was selected seventh in the conference preseason coaches' poll. The Mustangs received 31 total points in the poll – 15 behind sixth place Hawai'i. Cal State Fullerton – second in the Big West standings a season ago – was selected to capture the 2024 title with 77 points and six first-place votes. Defending champion Long Beach State was second in the poll, right behind the Titans on 75 points and with the remaining four first-place votes.
LOOKING AHEAD (FEB. 16-18): Playing its first 23 games away from home, Cal Poly resumes action at the Feb. 16-18 Silicon Valley Classic, co-hosted by San Jose State and Santa Clara. Opening play with Friday, Feb. 16 matchups against Seattle and San Jose State, Cal Poly returns on Saturday, Feb. 17 to meet Seattle once more before squaring off with Santa Clara. Cal Poly completes action on Sunday, Feb. 18 at San Jose State.
