Cal Poly’s Three Game Win Streak Snapped at Hawai’i Thursday
2/16/2024 12:35:00 AM | Women's Basketball
MANOA, HI — Junior guard Annika Shah and redshirt freshman forward Sierra Lichtie both scored in double figures but a late run by Hawai'i saw the Mustangs fall on the road to the Rainbow Wahine Thursday, 59-47.
Shah recorded her fourth straight double digit scoring game, finishing with a team-high 14 points. Lichtie poured in 11 points and five rebounds for her seventh double figure scoring game of the year.
It was a tight game in the first quarter with the first place Rainbow Wahine 14-9, 11-3 BW) shooting 54 percent. But it was Shah who scored six first quarter points for the Mustangs (13-10, 9-5 BW) to keep Cal Poly within three heading into the second quarter.
In the second, Hawai'i finished the first half on a 9-3 scoring run to take a 28-22 lead into halftime with Shah accounting for half of the Mustangs' points with 11.
The Mustangs cut the six-point deficit in half heading into the fourth trailing 38-35. In the fourth, Cal Poly took its first lead of the game since the opening minute with 8:30 remaining at 39-38.
However, that would be the final time the Mustangs led as with just under four minutes left, junior guard Sydney Bourland was called for a personal and technical foul which was the start of an 8-0 Hawai'i run over the next minute that put them ahead by 11. For the game, the Rainbow Wahine shot 26 free throws to Cal Poly's 10.
Cal Poly, now tied for fourth in the Big West standings, will be off for a week until returning home next Thursday, Feb. 22, to host Cal State Fullerton at 6 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center.
