Undefeated Mustangs Open Silicon Valley Classic Thursday

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Off to its best start since 2005 and third best start in program history, the undefeated Cal Poly softball team resumes action at the Feb. 15-18 Silicon Valley Classic, co-hosted by Santa Clara and San Jose State. Cal Poly (5-0), which outscored the opposition 39-14 at last weekend's NorCal Kickoff, opens Silicon Valley Classic play on Thursday, Feb. 15 at Santa Clara (2-3) at 4 p.m. Action shifts to San Jose State on Friday, Feb. 16 as the Mustangs face Seattle (3-2) at 11 a.m. and the host Spartans (1-4) at 11 a.m. Following a 10 a.m. Saturday matchup with Seattle (at San Jose State), Cal Poly closes Silicon Valley Classic action Sunday at San Jose State at 10 a.m. Playing its first 23 games away from home, Cal Poly's 5-0 mark to begin the year trails only the 1995 (6-0) and 1997 (15-0) squads for the best start to a season in the program's 50-year history.

CAL POLY VERSUS NORCAL KICKOFF OPPONENTS: Cal Poly's 14-game winning streak against Santa Clara was snapped by the Broncos (1-0) in the last meeting between the two sides on Feb. 27, 2022. The Mustangs still maintain a 45-15 all-time series lead … Cal Poly snapped a six-game slide against San Jose State with a 15-0, season-opening victory (Feb. 9). San Jose State leads the all-time series, 15-14 … Seattle holds the series lead against Cal Poly, 3-1, following a March 26, 2019 home doubleheader sweep of the Mustangs. Cal Poly's only victory against Seattle was a 6-1 win on March 19, 2016 at the San Diego Classic.
CLEMENTS PICKS RIGHT BACK UP: The leadoff batter in 90 of 95 games for Cal Poly since the start of the 2022 season, junior center fielder Jessica Clements earned Feb. 12 Big West Player of the Week honors after producing a team leading .563 (9-for-16) mark during the season-opening NorCal Kickoff (Feb. 9-11). With four multi-hit outings through Cal Poly's initial five games, Clements remains the top batter in program history with a .393 (123-for-313) career mark.
CAL POLY SELECTED SEVENTH IN BIG WEST POLL: Despite returning starters at all 10 positions and welcoming back all three All-Big West selections from 2023, Cal Poly was selected seventh in the conference preseason coaches' poll. The Mustangs received 31 total points in the poll – 15 behind sixth place Hawai'i. Cal State Fullerton – second in the Big West standings a season ago – was selected to capture the 2024 title with 77 points and six first-place votes. Defending champion Long Beach State was second in the poll, right behind the Titans on 75 points and with the remaining four first-place votes.
LOOKING AHEAD (FEB. Feb. 23-25): Cal Poly returns to the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic (Cathedral City, Calif.) for the eighth time since 2013, opening this year's edition on Friday, Feb. 23 against Rutgers and facing the Scarlet Knights for the just the second time in program history and first since March 8, 2013. Action in the desert continues on Saturday, Feb. 24 versus Illinois and BYU before the Mustangs close tournament action on Sunday, Feb. 25 against California and Fresno State.
ETC.: The Cal Poly program is in its 50th varsity season in 2024 and 20th year under head coach Jenny Condon … Cal Poly's 5-0 start to the year is its best since beginning the 2005 season 5-0.
