Softball Remains Undefeated After NorCal Kickoff Day 2
2/10/2024 7:30:00 PM | Softball
DAVIS, CA – The Mustangs finished Day 2 of the NorCal Kickoff with two more hard-fought wins, a 4-3 extra innings victory over Middle Tennessee and 7th inning 6-5 walk-off against Saint Mary's, leaving them undefeated heading into the fifth and final games of the season's first tournament. With a second straight pair of wins, Cal Poly has started the season 4-0 for the first time since 2017.
Cal Poly experienced some close calls but inevitably pulled through thanks to gutsy late game heroics, particularly from Paige Maier pitching for the fourth time in just as many games and nabbing both wins today while Kiara Blanchard carried against Saint Mary's with 4 RBI including the game-winning double.
During the extra innings nail-biter, Cal Poly and Middle Tennessee traded one run each in the opening inning. The Blue Raiders struck first, but Xiara Diaz quickly responded with a single to left center that drove in Juju Sargent.
Kate Judy started for the second time in two days and held strong, allowing just one hit through four innings. All was quiet offensively as a pitcher's duel ensued until the one more Cal Poly run was walked in during the bottom of the fourth and Mylina Garza knocked in another on a fielder's choice.
Up 3-1, the Mustangs were sitting comfortably before the Blue Raiders were able to string together two runs in the final inning, forcing Paige Maier into relief, for the third straight game, to start extra innings.
Maier walked the first batter in inning 8 but grounded a Middle Tennessee batter into a double play later in the frame, allowing the Mustangs a clear opportunity to win. Cal Poly quickly took advantage of the starting baserunner, playing it safe with a sac bunt to advance before Juju Sargent played the role of hero with a sac fly to bring in Caroline Allman, sealing the 4-3 victory.
Though Maier received the win decision, Judy sat down 8 on strikes while allowing just three earned runs through seven innings. Three Mustangs, including Sargent, Julia Barnett, and Jessica Clements, all enjoyed multi-hit efforts. Clements was perfect from the batter's box, going 3-for-3.
During the afternoon comeback victory, the Mustangs leaned on Paige Maier once again, this time to start in the circle. The game's eventual star, Kiara Blanchard, wasted no time in getting Cal Poly on the scoreboard, driving in two RBI after singling to left field during the first inning.
It was not until the third inning when Saint Mary's responded with a string of fielder's choice hits that brought in a singular runner. The Mustangs came right back with their own score as catcher Julia Barnett doubled into left field to bring Diaz across home plate for the for the second time that game.
Steady hitting through the final three innings allowed the Gaels to crawl back into the game run-by-run. Saint Mary's Toni Cervantes managed to smack a two-run homer that helped the Gaels to a 5-3 lead heading into the final Cal Poly at-bats.
With Kai Barrett reaching on a fielder's choice, Jade Contapay was called into action as a pinch runner. She advanced to second on a wild pitch as Juju Sargent would walk in the next at-bat. Another defensive error allowed Cal Poly to load the bases and Contapay scored to bring the deficit to just one run.
With two outs, bases loaded, and the game on the line, Kiara Blanchard multiplied her already two RBI that game with a walk-off double into right field, scoring Sargent and Jessica Clements.
After four straight wins, Clements has gone 7-for-12, while nine different Mustangs have already hit RBI, including five that have multiple. After Blanchard's massive walk-off effort, she leads the team with 6 RBI. Despite some rocky moments in the final game of the day, Paige Maier put in work these last two days with 11.2 innings pitched, a pair of wins, and just 9 hits allowed through four appearances in the circle.
Cal Poly wraps up the NorCal Kickoff tomorrow with a final noon game against Saint Mary's at Larue Field in Davis, CA. The Mustangs will be looking to sweep the tournament and return home with five wins.
