SAN LUIS OBISPO – Following a pair of historic defensive seasons for the Big West regular season champion Cal Poly men’s soccer program, junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune and sophomore defender Parker Owens became the program’s first United Soccer Coaches All-Far West Region first team selections in a decade Tuesday morning.
McCune, named Big West Goalkeeper of the Year in November, closed the year ranked third among NCAA Division I goalkeepers with a 0.63 goals against average, fourth with an .833 save percentage and ninth with eight shutouts.
A four-time Big West Defensive Player of the Week honoree in 2024, McCune’s 0.63 goals against average remains the top mark in program single season history while his eight solo shutouts rank one shy of the program record set in 2007.
Co-captain Owens, the Big West Defender of the Year honoree (Cal Poly’s first since 2001), assisted the program to nine shutouts in 2024 – one shy of the program record set in 2007.
One of five Mustangs to start all 18 matches and a member of a backline that conceded just 13 times (four fewer than the program record of 17 allowed in 2011), Owens finished second in the lineup with three assists while scoring his first career goal in a 3-1 home victory against Sacramento State (Oct. 9).
McCune and Owens are Cal Poly’s first USC All-Region honorees since 2014, when midfielder Chase Minter (first team) and goalkeeper Wade Hamilton (third) earned selection.
