SAN LUIS OBISPO – With two saves and his eighth shutout of 2024 during the Cal Poly men’s soccer team’s 1-0 home victory against Cal State Bakersfield (Nov. 2) to clinch the program’s first Big West regular season title, junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune was named Big West Defensive Player of the Week for a fourth time Monday afternoon.
With McCune solidifying Cal Poly between the posts, it was junior forward Conner Lisenbee who secured the program’s first regular season title and the top seed for the Big West Championship with the 87th-minute game-winning goal.
McCune enters the postseason ranked second among NCAA Division I goalkeepers with a 0.62 goals against average, third with eight shutouts and fifth with a .833 save percentage. McCune’s 0.62 goals against average remains the top single season mark in program history while his eight solo shutouts rank one shy of the program record set by Eric Branagan-Franco in 2007 and equaled by the standout a year later.
McCune’s fourth weekly honor eclipses the previous program mark of three earned by goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado during the 2021 season.
As a program, Cal Poly hosts either No. 4 UC Davis or No. 5 Cal State Bakersfield in the semifinals of the Big West Championship on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m. If the Mustangs advance, they would also host the Friday, Nov. 15 title matchup.
Now a 4?-time Big West Defensive Player of the Week honoree for your Big West regular season champion Cal Poly men's soccer program.
