SAN LUIS OBISPO – Now ranked among the nation’s top goalkeepers in multiple statistical categories and with back-to-back shutouts to open Big West play, Cal Poly junior goalkeeper Nicky McCune was named Big West Defensive Player of the Week for a third time this season on Monday afternoon.
McCune, also named Big West Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 9 and Sept. 30, made three saves in Cal Poly’s 1-0, Big West-opening victory at UC Davis (Oct. 2).
Four days later at Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara, McCune chalked up five saves to preserve a scoreless draw for the Mustangs and secure the road point that moved Cal Poly into a four-way tie for first place atop the conference table.
With the Mustangs now unbeaten in seven straight matches – the program’s lengthiest stretch since 2007 – McCune ranks seventh among NCAA goalkeepers with five solo shutouts, 20th in goals against average (0.73) and 21st in save percentage (.805).
McCune has now conceded just one goal from open play in his last 626 minutes and none in the last 316.
As a program, Cal Poly (4-3-4, 1-0-1) returns home to host Sacramento State (Wednesday, Oct. 9) and UC Riverside (Saturday, Oct. 12). Kickoff both evenings on ESPN+ from Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium is 7 p.m.
