Mustangs Come Up Short Monday at No. 12 San Diego
9/4/2023 9:04:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN DIEGO – No. 12 San Diego produced just four shots on target Monday evening, but found the back of the Cal Poly men's soccer net three times as the Mustangs slipped to a 3-0 setback at Torero Stadium.
With graduate goalkeeper Justin Siegel – an offseason transfer from Sacred Heart – making his debut for the Mustangs (0-3-0), San Diego (3-1-0) produced the eventual game-winning goal in the ninth minute as midfielder Mason Tunbridge crossed from the right of Cal Poly's penalty box for defender Ethan Warne, who headed in front of goal.
Cal Poly outshot San Diego during the first half, 6-5, with junior forward Jackson Kestler (above) turned away by San Diego goalkeeper Donovan Parisian in the 21st.
San Diego, however, doubled its lead on 63 minutes with Samy Kanaan's effort from outside the penalty area deflecting off a Mustang defender and past Siegel.
The Toreros capped the scoring in the 83rd minute as defender Owen Wiebe laid a pass off for Tunbridge, who lobbed a ball into the box for forward Steven Ramirez.
Following an eight-day break, Cal Poly returns home to Mustang Memorial Field to host Utah Valley on Tuesday, Sept. 12. Kickoff time is 7 p.m.
