Mustangs Sustain 3-0 Setback at San Diego State Friday
9/1/2023 9:26:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN DIEGO – San Diego State forward Rommee Jaridly's goal after just 49 seconds Friday evening stood as the eventual game-winner as the Cal Poly men's soccer program – reduced to 10 players for the final 73 minutes – dropped a 3-0 decision to the Aztecs at the SDSU Sports Deck.
Four days after Cal Poly (0-2-0) scored during the first minute of its Aug. 28 season opener against Oral Roberts, the Mustangs conceded just after kickoff with forward Alexander Levengood finding Jaridly for the opening effort.
The Aztecs (2-1-0), who earned the 500th victory in their program's history, then doubled the lead on 27 minutes through forward Terence Okoeguale.
Cal Poly, which saw a five-match unbeaten run against the Aztecs dating to 1995 snapped, placed half of its six shot attempts on target with junior forward Jackson Kestler (above) turned away by San Diego State goalkeeper Logan Erb in the 14th minute before forcing back-to-back saves in the 57th.
Cal Poly junior goalkeeper Gabe Penner, who appeared in 13 of Cal Poly's 17 matches last fall, was called upon to make just one save in the 85th.
San Diego State completed the scoring in the 81st minute with forward Austin Brummett heading home from midfielder Jules Anderson's corner.
Cal Poly concludes its opening road trip of the year on Monday, Sept. 4 at No. 12 San Diego. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
