SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly men's soccer program – under direction of first year head coach Oige Kennedy – opens the 2023 regular season and its 29th Division I campaign with three games in an eight-day window, beginning on Monday, Aug. 28 as the Mustangs host first-time foe Oral Roberts. Kickoff from Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital is 4:30 p.m. for Cal Poly, which follows with road dates at San Diego State (Friday, Sept. 1) and San Diego (Monday, Sept. 4). Opening its preseason camp on Aug. 11, Cal Poly returned five outfield starters and 14 letterwinners from last season while welcoming 14 incoming players – including three Division I transfers. Having dropped three straight season openers, Cal Poly looks to begin the year with a victory against a Division I opponent for the first time since edging UNLV on Aug. 28, 2015 (2-1). Oral Roberts, which finished 11-4-2 overall last year and captured the Summit League regular season title with a 7-1-0 mark, opens its season Friday evening at UC Santa Barbara.
PRESEASON IN PERSPECTIVE: Conducting three exhibition matches ahead of the regular season, Cal Poly was edged at UCLA, 1-0 (Aug. 15), before a 26th-minute goal from sophomore forward Luke Schaefer helped the Mustangs to a 1-1 draw at San Jose State (Aug. 19). With sophomore forward Conner Lisenbee completing a hat trick and five different Mustangs finding the back of the Fresno Pacific net, Cal Poly completed preparations with a 7-0 home victory against the Division II Sunbirds (Aug. 23).
CAL POLY VERSUS ORAL ROBERTS AND THE SUMMIT LEAGUE: The Mustangs have never previously faced Oral Roberts. Cal Poly has only previously faced two current Summit League members in Denver (six times between 1998-2003) and Kansas City (1999).
CAL POLY VERSUS SAN DIEGO STATE: Playing the Aztecs for the first time since a 1-1 home draw on Sept. 3, 2021, Friday's game at the SDSU Sports Deck is just Cal Poly's third all-time visit to San Diego State. Unbeaten in five straight, Cal Poly leads the all-time series, 4-1-2, with forward Adam Olson's 14th-minute goal delivering a 1-0 victory in the last visit to San Diego State on Sept. 16, 2017.
CAL POLY VERSUS SAN DIEGO: Falling at home to the Toreros last fall, 4-0, Cal Poly has dropped three straight decisions to San Diego and hasn't scored in the series since a 2-0 road triumph on Sept. 19, 1997. San Diego leads the all-time series, 4-1-0.
KENNEDY TAKES THE MUSTANG REINS: After helping direct Stanford to NCAA Tournament College Cup championships in 2016 and 2017 and four Pac-12 Conference titles in seven years and having led Division II Fort Lewis College to NCAA Tournament national championships in 2009 and 2011 as head coach, Oige Kennedy was introduced as Cal Poly's fifth head coach at the Division I level on Dec. 9, 2022. Kennedy succeeds Steve Sampson, who retired at the conclusion of the 2022 season.
UP NEXT (SEPT. 12): The Mustangs return home to open a two-game home stand against Utah Valley on Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. Managed by Kyle Beckerman – a 21-year Major League Soccer veteran and 58-cap winner with the United States Men's National Team – Utah Valley edged Cal Poly, 1-0, in the only previous meeting between the two sides on Aug. 30, 2019.
