Cal Poly Draws San Jose State in Saturday Exhibition, 1-1

SAN JOSE – Sophomore forward Luke Schaefer's 26th-minute goal handed the Cal Poly men's soccer program a halftime lead during Saturday's exhibition matchup at San Jose State, but the Spartans struck seven minutes after the restart as the Mustangs settled for a 1-1 draw.
With Cal Poly playing the second of three preseason exhibitions, defender Leonardo Martinez and fellow sophomore Oren Stuppel combined to set up Schaefer (above), who slotted past Spartans goalkeeper David Sweeney for a 1-0 lead.
Starting in goal for Cal Poly, sophomore Nicky McCune chalked up two first-half saves to preserve the lead. San Jose State, however, equalized in the 52nd minute through midfielder Beau Leroux.
Junior goalkeeper Gabe Penner added an additional second-half save for Cal Poly in 42 minutes.
Cal Poly, which saw 21 players feature Saturday, opened its preseason camp on Aug. 11. The Mustangs fell at UCLA in their initial Aug. 15 exhibition, 1-0.
Cal Poly plays its final exhibition tuneup when hosting Division II Fresno Pacific on Wednesday, Aug. 23. Kickoff from Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital is 7 p.m. The Mustangs then open the regular season on Monday, Aug. 28 against first-time opponent Oral Roberts at 4:30 p.m.
