Mustangs Split Friday Doubleheader with UC San Diego
5/12/2023 4:08:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman starting righthander Sophia Ramuno struck out eight with just one earned run allowed in a complete-game effort, but a sixth-inning, bases-clearing double from UC San Diego catcher Clarissa Reynoso marked the eventual winning edge for the Tritons as the Mustangs opened a Friday doubleheader and three-game series with a 4-3 setback. Cal Poly, however, recovered to win game No. 2 at Bob Janssen Field as sophomore righthander Paige Maier struck out five without a walk to fuel a 6-1 victory.
During Friday's opening 4-3 defeat, Ramuno (11-13) set down the first nine hitters faced before Tritons left fielder Morgan Eng singled to lead off the fourth. After Eng swiped second – her 36th steal in 37 attempts this season – UC San Diego first baseman Bobbi Aguirre doubled to right center with two down to break the stalemate.
Cal Poly (18-23, 11-15) also saw its first nine hitters retired in order by UC San Diego starting righthander Jada Cecil (11-10) before taking a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. With center fielder Jessica Clements drawing a leadoff walk and reaching second through a sacrifice bunt executed by shortstop Xiara Diaz, junior right fielder Juju Sargent supplied a run-scoring single up the middle. Three spots later, catcher Julia Barnett singled to left, scoring Sargent for Cal Poly's lead.
Handed the lead, Ramuno set down UC San Diego (19-32, 9-17) in order during the fifth. The Tritons, however, loaded the bases with two down during the top of the sixth before Reynoso delivered her two-out, two-strike double to the left center field wall that provided UC San Diego a 4-2 lead.
Cal Poly returned in the bottom half of the sixth to load the bases with no outs. The next two Cal Poly hitters produced fielder's choices with UC San Diego twice throwing out the lead Mustang runner at home. Left fielder Kiara Blanchard next earned a full-count walk to force home pinch runner Kenny Litana for a 4-3 deficit, but Tritons righthanded reliever Kaia Simpson forced a lineout from Clements to strand the Cal Poly bases loaded.
Into the seventh, Ramuno retired UC San Diego in order, but Cal Poly stranded its eighth and final baserunner during the bottom half to close Friday's initial matchup.
During Friday's second matchup, Maier (5-5) set down the first five Tritons faced and Cal Poly opened the scoring during the bottom of the first as a two-out squeeze bunt from Allman scored Clements from third for a 1-0 advantage.
After conceding UC San Diego's initial hit in the second, Maier stranded two Tritons in scoring position during the top half of the third to preserve Cal Poly's advantage. The Mustangs then doubled their lead during the bottom half as Clements followed a leadoff Blanchard double with a run-scoring, two-bagger of her own.
UC San Diego grabbed a run back in the top of the fourth as third baseman Sophia Real singled home Aguirre with one down for a 2-1 deficit. Maier, however, kept the Tritons to just a hit in the fifth and without a baserunner in the sixth.
Cal Poly finalized the scoring during the bottom half of the sixth with pinch hitter Claire Early and first baseman Kai Barrett supplying run-scoring hits before Blanchard laced a two-run double down the right field line to complete a 6-1 scoreline.
