Cal Poly Edges UC San Diego, 1-0, to Close 2023 Season
5/13/2023 3:54:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Third baseman Mylina Garza's fourth-inning, run-scoring double marked the difference Saturday afternoon and fellow freshman Sophia Ramuno struck out nine in a complete-game, two-hit victory as the Cal Poly softball program completed a three-game series and 2023 regular season with a 1-0 win against UC San Diego at Bob Janssen Field.
Ramuno (12-13) faced the minimum number of UC San Diego batters through the opening three and one-third innings before walking second baseman Marissa Hassis and allowing her first hit to center fielder Keila Bosinger. Ramuno, however, retired the next two spots in the lineup to keep the Tritons scoreless.
Offensively, Cal Poly (19-23, 12-15) was kept to just one baserunner during the first two innings against UC San Diego starting righthander Kaia Simpson (2-7) before stranding the bases loaded to close the third.
Mustang sophomore designated player Caroline Allman, however, led off the bottom half of the fourth with a double to left center. Four pitches later, Garza doubled into the same gap, plating Allman for the game's only run.
Handed the lead, Ramuno – who didn't allow a UC San Diego baserunner past second – stranded two Tritons in fifth, retired the side in order during the sixth and left one more on in the top half of the seventh to close out Cal Poly's series-clinching win.
Ramuno's nine-strikeout effort was one shy of her career high.
Prior to Saturday's matchup, the Mustangs honored their one graduating senior – Ellie Yamashita, who made her 93rd career appearance and started against UC San Diego as Cal Poly's designated player.
