Mustangs Split Pair against Hawai’i with 7-0, Second-Game Win
4/8/2023 7:52:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – A five-run fourth inning from Hawai'i accounted for all of the offense the Rainbow Wahine required in game No. 1 Saturday afternoon as the Cal Poly softball program, in front of a capacity crowd of 1,000 fans – the first sellout at Bob Janssen Field since 2007 – sustained a 5-1 setback in the doubleheader opener. Cal Poly recovered to secure a 7-0 victory in game No. 2 after sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements (above) tied a Big West all-time record with five hits.
During Saturday's opening 5-1 loss, Cal Poly starting freshman righthander Ally Robbins (1-3) stranded the Hawai'i bases loaded to close the top of the first before keeping the Rainbow Wahine to one combined baserunner during the second and third.
Hawai'i catcher Izabella Martinez, however, broke a scoreless deadlock with a home run to open the fourth. A throwing error from Robbins later helped contribute to four more runs as Hawai'i entered the bottom of the fourth leading, 5-0.
The Mustangs (11-16, 4-8) took a run back at the first opportunity with freshman third baseman Mylina Garza's two-out single bringing home sophomore designated player Caroline Allman for a 5-1 deficit.
Cal Poly enjoyed runners during each of the final three innings, advancing a Mustang as far as third base in the fifth and seventh. Hawai'i starting righthander Key-annah Campbell Pu'a (10-4), however, kept the Mustangs scoreless to close her complete-game, six-hitter.
During Saturday's second matchup, Cal Poly starting freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno (7-9) retired Hawai'i in order during the top of the first and the Mustangs opened the bottom half with three successive singles. Sophomore catcher Julia Barnett followed with a grounder to Hawai'i second baseman Maya Nakamura – who sailed her throw home over Martinez behind the plate. Two Mustangs scored on the miscue to hand Ramuno the lead.
Cal Poly returned to load the bases again in both the second and third innings, first taking a 3-0 lead during the second after Barnett drew a full-count walk with two down to force home shortstop Xiara Diaz. The Mustangs ran the lead to 4-0 in the third with Clements singling home freshman left fielder Kiara Blanchard with two down.
Hawai'i itself loaded the bases against Ramuno with one down in the top of the fourth. Ramuno, however, forced a fly out from first baseman Mya'Liah Bethea before striking out third baseman Rachel Sabourin to strand the bases full.
Cal Poly then ran the lead to 7-0 during the bottom half, loading the bases for the fourth time in as many innings before Diaz delivered a two-run base hit and Clements supplied a run-scoring single.
Taking over for Ramuno to begin the fifth, sophomore reliever Paige Maier struck out four in three innings to keep Hawai'i scoreless.
Clements recorded her fifth hit with a sixth-inning single. She became the fourth Mustang in program history with a five-hit game and first since All-America selection Sierra Hyland performed the feat at UC Davis on April 29, 2017.
Cal Poly resumes action and completes a six-game home stand when hosting CSU Bakersfield April 15-16. The three-game series gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 15.
