Mustangs Sweep Saturday Doubleheader; Condon Ties Wins Record
4/15/2023 3:34:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior Ellie Yamashita enjoyed her first career hit – a two RBI single – and sophomore designated player Caroline Allman's (above) run-scoring triple finalized the Cal Poly softball program's 8-0, five-inning victory against CSU Bakersfield to open a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Bob Janssen Field.
Cal Poly completed the Saturday sweep with a 5-1 win in game No. 2 as 19th-year head coach Jenny Condon earned her 443rd win in charge of the Mustangs to match the program record for career victories established by Lisa Boyer (1989-2004).
During Saturday's opening triumph, Cal Poly (13-16, 6-8) recorded all the runs required for victory during the bottom of the first inning as sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements led off with a single, stole second, reached third through a wild pitch from CSU Bakersfield starting righthander Brianna Sanchez (5-11) and scored with an Allman ground ball up the middle.
Cal Poly then went up 3-0 in the second as two throwing errors from CSU Bakersfield second baseman Ciara Jensen contributed to runs from second baseman Mia Perez and right fielder Juju Sargent.
In the circle for Cal Poly, sophomore starter Paige Maier kept CSU Bakersfield hitless and to just two baserunners before giving way to fellow righthander Sophia Ramuno (8-9) to open the third. Ramuno conceded just three hits, struck out five and – combined with Maier – didn't let a CSU Bakersfield baserunner past second.
Retired in order to close the third, Cal Poly added two more runs during the fourth, first executing a double steal that plated shortstop Xiara Diaz before first baseman Kai Barrett brought home Allman with a single for a 5-0 advantage.
The Mustangs then secured the run-rule victory in the fifth with Diaz first drawing a two-out walk before Clements produced her third single of the matchup. Yamashita – in a pinch-hitting role – followed with her two-run single before scoring herself after Allman tripled to right to cement Cal Poly's 8-0, run-rule win.
During Saturday's second victory, Jensen broke a scoreless deadlock for CSU Bakersfield in the top of the fourth, leading off with an inside-the-park home run down the left field line.
Held to just one hit through the opening three innings, Cal Poly took over the lead at the first opportunity with freshman third baseman Mylina Garza drawing a leadoff walk before Diaz lined a full-count, two-out single into right field. Clements followed with a two-run triple down the right field line before scoring herself after Sargent supplied an RBI single for a 3-1 advantage.
Ramuno took over in the circle for sophomore righthander Kate Judy (making her first start of the season) to begin the fourth and struck out four in two and one-third innings to earn the victory after Cal Poly assumed the lead during her stint. Maier threw the final one and two-third innings, holding CSU Bakersfield hitless.
The Mustangs finalized the scoreline in the sixth with four CSU Bakersfield errors in the inning contributing to two Cal Poly runs and a 5-1 advantage.
