Mustangs Fall in Friday Series Opener to Hawai’i, 4-2

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Junior first baseman Kai Barrett's two-run double provided the Cal Poly softball program a brief lead against Hawai'i, but the Rainbow Wahine scored three times without reply to hand the Mustangs a 4-2 setback in Friday afternoon's series opener at Bob Janssen Field.
Mustang starting freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno (6-9) kept Hawai'i (23-13, 6-4) to a single hit and just two baserunners the first time through the lineup before shortstop Xiao Gin – from the top spot in the lineup – slashed a home run down the right field line with one down in the top of the third.
Cal Poly (10-15, 3-7) recovered to take the lead at the first opportunity with junior right fielder Juju Sargent and sophomore designated player Caroline Allman producing successive one-out hits before Barrett (above) – a native of Waipahu, O'ahu – lined a double into right center to hand Cal Poly a 2-1 advantage.
Hawai'i, however, regained the lead immediately in the top of the fourth. With catcher Izabella Martinez singling with one down, Ramuno then hit first baseman Mya'Liah Bethea. After a fielder's choice placed Hawai'i runners at the corner bases, a passed ball from Cal Poly sophomore catcher Julia Barnett led to tied scoreline. Center fielder Cierra Bartolotti then delivered a run-scoring single to right to hand her side a 3-2 lead.
The Rainbow Wahine then completed the scoring in the fifth as Martinez singled with two down to plate second baseman Maya Nakamura.
Cal Poly and Hawai'i complete the three-game series on Saturday, April 8 with a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
