SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Coming off a home win Wednesday over UC Riverside, Cal Poly men's tennis will look to keep things rolling Saturday when welcoming in UC Irvine to Mustang Tennis Complex for a 11 a.m. match.
The Mustangs (6-8, 1-1 BW), who are currently 1-1 in Big West play, will be looking to move up the conference standings with a win Saturday. The Anteaters (9-6, 2-0 BW), last year's winners of the Big West Championships, are 2-0 in conference play so far and are in a three-way tie for first place in the standings along with No. 32 UC Santa Barbara and UC Davis. They are currently riding an eight match winning streak, the longest currently in the Big West.
Cal Poly has won three of its last four matches with the most recent being a 4-0 shutout of the Highlanders on Wednesday. Juniors Noah Berry and Fernando Fonseca have been huge catalysts to the team's success as of late in both singles and doubles. Playing together at the No. 1 spot in doubles, they are 2-1, including a win in Wednesday's match.
Playing at the No. 1 spot in singles, Berry has won four straight and is a team-best 10-2 so far this season. He is ranked 83rd in the most recent ITA National Singles Rankings. He is also 2-0 so far this year in Big West matches.
Fonseca has also been red hot, having won his last four singles matches, including a 3-0 record since playing at the No. 3 spot, to push his overall record to 6-5.
Starting off matches winning the doubles point has been the recipe for success for the Mustangs. In five of their six wins thus far, they have taken the doubles point. The only exception was their 4-2 win over William & Mary on March 25.
The Mustangs have won seven of the last eight meetings with UC Irvine. The Anteaters beat Cal Poly in the semifinals of last season's Big West Championships. They then went on to defeat UC Santa Barbara in the finals and earn the conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament where they lost in the first round to San Diego.
UC Irvine's No. 1 doubles pairing of Brandon Park and Noah Zamora are a team-leading 8-4 this season, although they have lost their last two matches. In singles, they have six guys with seven or more wins, four of whom have won at least their last five matches.
After Saturday's match, the Mustangs will have three regular season matches left. Their final home match will be Sunday, April 16 against Hawai'i. They will then play their final two regular season matches on the road, first against UC San Diego April 21 then wrap it up against No. 32 UC Santa Barbara April 23. The Big West Championships are April 27-30 in San Diego.
