Cal Poly Edged by Big West Leader Cal State Fullerton in Finale, 2-0
4/29/2023 3:45:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly starting freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno tossed a complete-game, two-hitter Saturday, but her sixth-inning throwing error contributed to the afternoon's only runs as the Mustangs closed a three-game series against Big West leader Cal State Fullerton with a 2-0 setback at Bob Janssen Field.
Â
Ramuno (10-11) retired 15 of the first 16 hitters faced, setting Cal State Fullerton (30-16, 17-4) down in order during all but the third inning until Titans left fielder Evelyn Sablan tripled to lead off the sixth. Right fielder Anaiya Mitchell followed with a grounder back to the circle, but Ramuno overthrew Mustang junior first baseman Kai Barrett with the miscue plating Sablan. Center fielder Bailey Wallace added a run-scoring sacrifice fly later in the inning as the Titans departed the top of the sixth with a 2-0 lead.
Â
Offensively, Cal Poly was kept to three hits by Titans starting righthander Myka Sutherlin (17-7) – the second of which was a single from sophomore catcher Julia Barnett (above) to lead off the bottom half of the fifth. With pinch runner Kenny Litana on second base following a sacrifice bunt, however, junior designated player Claire Early lined into an inning-ending double play.
Â
Facing the 2-0 deficit entering the bottom of the sixth, Cal Poly saw center fielder Jessica Clements reach on a Titans fielding error before Sutherlin hit shortstop Xiara Diaz. The duo executed a double steal with two down, but Sutherlin earned an inning-ending groundout from junior right fielder Juju Sargent to stamp out Cal Poly's best scoring opportunity.
Â
Ramuno, who threw 74 percent of her 110 pitches for strikes, stranded just one Cal State Fullerton baserunner and struck out three against zero walks.
Â
Cal Poly (15-21, 8-13) continues action when visiting UC Davis for a three-game, May 6-7 series. Action gets underway with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, May 6.
