Cal Poly Falls Saturday at UC Davis in Delayed Series Opener, 2-0
5/6/2023 6:41:00 PM | Softball
DAVIS – During Saturday afternoon action delayed three-and-a-half hours by rain and lightning and reduced to a single matchup, the Cal Poly softball program opened a three-game series against UC Davis with a 2-0 setback.
It was a two-out, two-run double from Aggies first baseman Sarah Starks in the bottom half of the first inning which decided Saturday's action, originally scheduled for a 1 p.m. doubleheader before weather intervened.
Cal Poly and UC Davis will now close the three-game series Sunday with an 10 a.m. doubleheader.
With Cal Poly (15-22, 8-14) kept to just a leadoff single from sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements in the first, UC Davis (27-17, 13-9) found the game's only run in the bottom half as Starks singled up the middle with two down against Mustang starting freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno (10-12) to plate center fielder Anna Dethlefson and left fielder Leah Polson.
Aggies starting righthander Kenedi Brown (15-8) then retired 18 of Cal Poly's final 21 hitters to close the matchup. A leadoff double from Mustangs freshman third baseman Mylina Garza (above) to open the fifth counted as Cal Poly's final hit of the afternoon and best scoring opportunity. Following a sacrifice bunt from junior designated player Claire Early, however, pinch runner Ellie Yamashita was stranded on third.
