SANTA BARBARA – The Cal Poly softball program bridged an early four-run deficit Sunday afternoon versus UC Santa Barbara and closed within two runs of the lead during the sixth, but the Mustangs stranded the game-tying runs in the seventh and closed a three-game series with an 8-6 loss to the Gauchos.
UC Santa Barbara (19-11, 6-3) grabbed Sunday's opening lead during the bottom of the first with catcher Ashley Donaldson following shortstop Madelyn McNally's leadoff walk with a run-scoring double. Left fielder Alexa Sams later produced a two-run triple before second baseman Jazzy Santos added a sacrifice fly as the Gauchos departed the first with a 4-0 advantage.
Held hitless and to just one baserunner during the first two innings, Cal Poly (10-14, 3-6) closed within a run of UC Santa Barbara's lead in the top of the first after sophomore designated player Caroline Allman supplied a two-out, bases-clearing triple.
The Mustangs then tied the scoreline in the fourth with junior shortstop Xiara Diaz following a leadoff double by freshman third baseman Mylina Garza and one-out walk from junior second baseman Mia Perez with an RBI single down the left field line.
The stalemate lasted just a half-inning, however, as UC Santa Barbara loaded the bases with one down before Sams singled into left field. Santos followed with a run-scoring sacrifice fly before first baseman Hannah Damore handed the Gauchos a 7-4 lead with a run-scoring single.
After UC Santa Barbara added a final run in the fifth to double its lead, Cal Poly scored twice in the sixth, cutting the deficit to 8-6 after Diaz added another run-scoring single to the outfield and a fly out from sophomore catcher Julia Barnett helped plate junior pinch runner Kenny Litana.
Into the seventh, Garza reached with a one-out single ahead of sophomore pinch hitter Malia Mah's two-out walk. However, Diaz – who matched a career best with three hits – flew out to end the matchup.
Sophomore righthander Paige Maier (2-4) sustained the loss for Cal Poly after conceding UC Santa Barbara's opening three runs. Freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno struck out five in three and two-third innings of relief.
Cal Poly resumes action and opens a six-game home stand when hosting Hawai'i for a three-game, April 7-8 series. Action at Bob Janssen Field opens with a 5 p.m. matchup on Friday, April 7.
