SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Juniors Joe Leather and Colter Smith each collected singles wins, but Cal Poly men's tennis came up just short Sunday against Hawai'i in the final home match of the season, falling 4-3.
Sunday was also the final home match for senior Ben Keyser, who was honored for his contributions to the program after the match. The Mustangs (6-10, 1-3 BW) got off to a good start in the dual match, taking the doubles point. Cal Poly's No. 1 duo of juniors Noah Berry and Fernando Fonseca had a dominant 6-0 win to kick things off. That was followed by the No. 2 pair of sophomore Bastiaan Weststrate and Smith collecting a 6-4 victory to seal the point for the Mustangs. Once singles got underway, Leather worked quickly at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-2, 6-2 over Vojta Vlkovsky to put the Mustangs up 2-0. He is now 7-8 on the season. The Rainbow Warriors (10-8, 3-3 BW) then proceeded to win at the No. 5, 1, and 6 spots to take a 3-2 lead. Smith then tied things back up at 3-3 after he won his match at the No. 4 spot 7-6(3), 6-3. It came down to a deciding third set at the No. 3 spot between the Mustangs' Fernando Fonseca and the Rainbow Warriors' Axel Labrunie. Fonseca battled, but Labrunie came out victorious in the third 6-1 to seal the dual for Hawai'i. Cal Poly has two regular season matches left, both on the road. The Mustangs will face UC San Diego Friday, April 21 at 3 p.m. followed by the regular season finale Sunday, April 23 against UC Santa Barbara at noon.
