SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — It's been a season full of ups, downs, and mother nature getting in the way of matches being played. But after all that, Cal Poly men's tennis will embark on its final two matches of the regular season this week as they head south to face UC San Diego and No. 39 UC Santa Barbara.
The Mustangs (6-10, 1-3 BW) will face the Tritons (7-14, 0-4 BW) Friday, April 21 at 3 p.m. in La Jolla. They will then head a few hours north to wrap up the regular season against the No. 39 Gauchos (19-3, 4-1 BW) Sunday, April 23 at noon.
Sunday's match against UCSB will be streamed live on the Gauchos' website. The link to that can be found on the schedule page.
Cal Poly will be looking to end the regular strong and head into next week's Big West Championships with some momentum. The Mustangs are fifth in the Big West standings but unfortunately cannot move up any higher. As it stands now, Cal Poly would face off against Hawai'i, who the Mustangs lost to 4-3 this past weekend, in the first round of the Big West Championships Friday, April 28 at 9 a.m.
UC San Diego heads into Friday's match still seeking its first win of conference play. They are 0-4 so far and are coming off a 4-3 loss to UC Riverside last week. The Mustangs are 2-0 all-time against the Tritons since they joined the Big West.
UCSB, winners of six of the last seven Big West Tournament championships, is ranked No. 39 in the nation in the latest ITA rankings. They are currently second in the Big West standings at 4-1, behind first place UC Davis. They have won four of their last five matches, most recently victories over Hawai'i and UC Irvine. Their top doubles duo, Phillip Jordan and Kai Brady, are ranked No. 76 in the nation in doubles by the ITA. The last time the Mustangs faced the Gauchos in Isla Vista in 2021, Cal Poly came out victorious 4-3.
Following Sunday's match against UCSB, Cal Poly will have a few days to prepare for the Big West Championships, which begin Thursday, April 27 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
