SANTA BARBARA – Center fielder Jessica Clements enjoyed a two-run double and fellow sophomore Julia Barnett (above) produced a two-run homer, but the Cal Poly softball program trailed UC Santa Barbara from the onset in Saturday's series opener as the Mustangs sustained an 8-4 setback. The Gauchos also prevailed in game No. 2 of Saturday's doubleheader, utilizing a six-run fourth-inning to hand Cal Poly an 8-2 defeat.
During Saturday's series opener, Cal Poly (10-13, 3-5) was retired in order by Gauchos starting righthander Camryn Snyder (8-4) during the top of the first before UC Santa Barbara took the game's only lead in the bottom half through a two-out, two-run triple by left fielder Alexa Sams.
Snyder set down the first 10 Cal Poly hitters of the game before junior right fielder Juju Sargent singled with one down in the top of the fourth. Snyder later walked sophomore designated player Caroline Allman and junior first baseman Kai Barrett to load the bases with two down before earning a fly out from freshman third baseman Mylina Garza to strand the Cal Poly bases loaded.
The Gauchos (18-11, 5-3) then increased their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth after Cal Poly starting freshman righthander Sophia Ramuno (6-8) hit designated player Daryn Siegel with the bases loaded before Sams added a two-run single – once more with two down.
Clements cut into UC Santa Barbara's lead with her two-run double in the fifth, but the Gauchos scored three more times in the bottom half to go up 8-2.
Barnett's two-run shot in the seventh – her first homer since an opening-day effort against North Dakota – completed the scoring.
During Saturday's second game, Cal Poly was once more retired in order to begin the matchup and UC Santa Barbara grabbed the initial lead in the bottom half of the first as Siegel grounded out to plate shortstop Madelyn McNally.
Mustang starting freshman righthander Ally Robbins (1-2) returned in the second to strand two Gaucho baserunners and Cal Poly equalized in the third as Clements singled with one down to plate junior left fielder Claire Early.
UC Santa Barbara, however, surged back ahead during the bottom of the third with Sams singling up the middle of the infield to bring home McNally.
The Gauchos then placed the scoreline out of reach with their six-run fourth inning highlighted by a two-run single from McNally.
Trailing 8-1 entering the fifth, Cal Poly was set down in order by Gauchos starting righthander Malaya Johnson (3-4) before stranding one in the sixth. Kept to five hits, the Mustangs completed the scoring in the seventh with junior shortstop Xiara Diaz singling up the middle with two outs to bring home Early for the 8-2 deficit.
