Cal Poly Falls to No. 2 UCLA Saturday at Garman Classic

FULLERTON – Second-ranked UCLA followed a two-run first inning with an 11-run second Saturday morning as the Cal Poly softball program sustained a 16-0, five-inning loss to the Bruins at the Cal State Fullerton-hosted Judi Garman Classic.
With shortstop Maya Brady supplying a run-scoring double and first baseman Jordan Woolery an RBI single in the top of the first inning, UCLA's immediate 2-0 lead would eventually be all the Bruins required for victory.
With Cal Poly retired in order to close the first, UCLA then added its 11-run second, highlighted by a grand slam from designated player Sharlize Palacios.
Held to four combined hits by UCLA starting righthander Taylor Tinsley (3-0) and reliever Lauren Shaw, Cal Poly stranded the bases loaded to cap the second inning.
The Bruins completed the scoring with three runs in the top of the third. Cal Poly received singles from junior right fielder Juju Sargent (above) in the third and sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements in the fifth, but both Mustangs were stranded in the shutout.
