Mustangs Edged in Series Finale by UC Riverside, 6-5

RIVERSIDE — Looking to complete a three-game series sweep of UC Riverside Sunday afternoon, the Cal Poly softball program scored once in the top of the seventh inning before stranding the bases loaded and departing Amy S. Harrison Field with a 6-5 setback to the Highlanders.
Trailing 5-1 entering the sixth inning, Cal Poly (10-11, 3-3) cut its deficit to one run after junior shortstop Xiara Diaz supplied an RBI single and junior right fielder Juju Sargent added a two-out, two-run base hit.
Cal Poly handed UC Riverside a run back in the bottom half of the sixth after freshman reliever Amy Ross hit Highlanders second baseman Leah Brito with two down and the bases loaded. Ross, however, earned an inning-ending fielder's choice from designated player Samiya Jones to leave the bases loaded and the Mustangs with a 6-4 deficit to overcome.
Mustang junior first baseman Kai Barrett, however, drew a five-pitch leadoff walk to open the seventh before freshman third baseman Mylina Garza lined a full-count single into right center. Two spots in the lineup later, sophomore pinch hitter Malia Mah singled to plate Barrett.
Highlanders starting righthander Maddie Heinlin (5-6) — back in the circle following two relief pitchers — induced a Diaz fly out before sophomore center fielder Jessica Clements bunted to load the bases for Sargent. Heinlin, however, forced a Sargent flyout with the first pitch of the at-bat to end the game.
Sargent finished with a game high three of Cal Poly's 13 hits while Clements added two. As a team, Cal Poly stranded 12 runners.
Cal Poly resumes action and closes a six-game road trip at UC Santa Barbara April 1-2. Series action opens with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, April 1.
