SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly women's basketball head coach Shanele Stires has announced the addition of three new players to the roster for the 2022-23 season.
The newcomers consist of all Division I transfers. They join incoming freshman Andrea Stajic (Arroyo Grande, CA) and four walk-on freshmen to round out the Mustangs' 20 rostered players this season.
"These three are not only fabulous student-athletes, but human beings," Stires said of the signings. "Their team-first mindsets and wealth of experience are tremendous cultural fits as we look to move our program in a positive direction."
More about the newcomers:
Nikola Kovacikova
Guard
Levice, Slovakia/Penn
Kovacikova is a graduate transfer who comes to Cal Poly after previously playing at both Penn and Georgetown. Last season at Penn, she played in 19 games with eight starts, totaling 56 points, 30 rebounds, 22 assists, and nine steals while averaging 14.8 minutes per game. She had a career-high 18 points and six assists at St. Francis Brooklyn where she shot 4-for-8 from three-point range. Off the court, she earned Penn's Norman J. Goldring Prize and George H. Frazier Prize which is given to a senior female student-athlete with the highest GPA.
Kovacikova spent her first two collegiate seasons at Georgetown. As a sophomore in 2019-20, she appeared in 27 games with 12 starts and was the Hoyas' third-leading scorer, averaging 7.9 ppg as well as pulling in 3.2 rpg. She recorded two double-doubles on the season including a career-high 20 points and 12 rebounds against Seton Hall. As a freshman in 2018-19, she won the team's Newcomer of the Year Award after playing in all 35 games with eight starts, averaging 4.0 ppg and 1.8 rpg.
Coach Stires comment: "Nikola is a smart and savvy combo guard who brings international experience and much needed three-point shooting. Her Big East experience give her the credentials to make an immediate impact in our program."
Oumou Toure
Guard
Kennewick, WA/Butler
Toure comes to Cal Poly after having spent the last three years at Butler. She played her freshman season before missing the next two due to injury and the COVID pandemic. As a freshman in 2019-20, she was named to the Big East All-Freshman Team. That season, she appeared in 27 games, making 20 starts and ranked second on the team in scoring at 9.1 points per game while shooting 46 percent from the field to go along with 6.1 rebounds per game. She also led the Big East and ranked 45th in the NCAA in steals per game at 2.33 and was the team leader in blocked shots with 28.
Coming out of high school in Kennewick, WA, she was rated as a four-star recruit by ProspectsNation.com. At Kamiakin High School, she was a four-year starter and is the school's all-time leading scorer. As a senior, she was named the Washington AP Player of the Year. For her career, she averaged 24.2 ppg, 11.1 rebounds per game, and 3.4 steals per game.
Coach Stires comment: "Oumou brings an accomplished background with size, strength, and versatility. We will be able to utilize her versatility in a lot of ways that makes her a Swiss army knife and that's a coach's dream."
Taylor Wu
Guard
Honolulu, HI/California Baptist
Wu comes to Cal Poly after playing three seasons at Caifornia Baptist University. There, she played in 70 career games. She made her mark as a freshman in 2019-20, averaging 6.6 ppg, 1.7 rpg, 1.7 apg in 18.4 minutes per game. She broke the program's freshman single game scoring record after dropping 37 points against Ottawa (AZ) and in the same game broke the program record for threes made in a game with 10.
As a sophomore, she started 19 of 27 games, averaging 8.9 ppg, 1.7 apg, and 21.9 minutes per game. She scored in double figures 11 times including a season-high 15 against Pepperdine.
Wu attended 'Iolani School in Honolulu where she led the school to a Hawai'i State Championship. In the state championship game, she scored a team-high 19 points. She was also named to the 2018-19 All-USA Hawai'i First Team.
Coach Stires comment: "Taylor is jet-quick with great ball skills, a competitive chip and determination. She's won a conference championship at this level, so she understands what it takes to win and gives our program much needed postseason and championship experience."
