PORTLAND, Ore. – Junior goalkeeper Victor Rodriguez – ranked first among NCAA Division I players with 23 total saves – recorded six Friday evening, but the Cal Poly men's soccer program sustained a 5-0 defeat to Portland at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex.
Rodriguez turned away Portland's initial shot on target in the 17th minute. The Pilots, however, found the opening goal in the 21st though midfielder Gurman Sangha's effort into the top right corner of the Cal Poly net.
Portland (1-0-2) doubled its lead nine minutes later as an initial shot attempt from defender Delentz Pierre was stopped by Rodriguez. The save, however, was pushed out in front of goal for midfielder Jake Arteaga, who buried his first shot of the night into the back of the Mustang net.
The Pilots eventually took a 3-0 lead into the break with midfielder Sebastian Nava notching his second goal of the season in the 39th minute.
Portland added its fourth goal 15 minutes after the restart through forward CJ Tibbling and the fifth on 87 minutes via defender Michael Hatcher.
