Mustangs on Downside of Six-Goal Evening versus Houston Baptist
9/5/2022 9:55:00 PM | Men's Soccer
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior forward Max Kleinhammes and freshman midfielder Richie Garcia (above) found the Cal Poly men's soccer program's first goals of 2022, but the Mustangs – trailing after a five-goal first half – fell to Houston Baptist during Monday evening's home opener inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium, 4-2.
Junior midfielder Tony Ruiz and sophomore forward Drew Patterson each produced a game high five shots apiece for Cal Poly (0-4-0), which scored twice inside 23 minutes – but held a combined lead for a total of eight minutes, 17 seconds.
Cal Poly scored Monday's opening goal with its first shot attempt of the evening as Kleinhammes latched onto an upfield pass from Ruiz and fired to the left of Houston Baptist goalkeeper Alex Aitken for his first goal in 367 days.
Cal Poly's first lead of the season lasted just three-and-a-half minutes, however, as Huskies forward Bryant Farkarlun picked out midfielder D'Alessandro Herrera, who tied the matchup for the first time in the 19th minute with his second strike of 2022.
Just over three minutes later though Cal Poly surged back ahead. An initial shot attempt from Patterson was stopped by Aitken, but the rebounded save fell for Garcia, who scored his first career goal inside the right post.
Five minutes later, Houston Baptist (1-1-2) resquared the scoreline with forward Kharrel Medza dragging the ball toward the left corner before crossing back toward goal for defender Aldo Tarantini, who headed past Mustang junior goalkeeper Victor Rodriguez
Houston Baptist then grabbed its first lead of the night 11 minutes from halftime as a corner kick from Herrera was headed away by the Mustangs before falling to Huskies substitute forward Ethan Giwa-McNeil, whose attempt placed his side up, 3-2.
The Huskies finalized the scoring in the 59th minute after Mustang sophomore defender Logan Thralls was whistled for a penalty following a foul on forward Kaone Kolagano. From the spot, Giwa-McNeil converted past Rodriguez for the 4-2 lead.
Outshooting Houston Baptist, 7-2, during the second half, Cal Poly forced Aitken into three saves during the final 26 minutes.
Following a week break, Cal Poly resumes action at San Francisco on Monday, Sept. 12. Kickoff from Nogoesco Stadium is 7 p.m.
