8/28/2022 5:24:00 PM | Men's Soccer
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior goalkeeper Victor Rodriguez (above) finished with a career best 10 saves, but the Cal Poly men's soccer program closed a two-game stretch at Ohio State's Wolstein Classic with a 3-0 setback to the Buckeyes at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
During Sunday's matchup, Cal Poly (0-2-0) held Ohio State (1-0-1) without a shot attempt for the opening 17 minutes before Rodriguez turned the Buckeyes away twice in a 24-second span.
The Buckeyes eventually broke through in the 35th with midfielders Laurence Wootton and Luciano Pechota combining to set up midfielder Marko Borkovic for Sunday's opening goal.
Cal Poly, meanwhile, produced its first shot on target in the 30th minute with Ohio State goalkeeper Keagan McLaughlin stopping Mustangs freshman midfielder Richie Garcia.
Cal Poly freshman forward Sean McTague was then halted on 37 minutes and Rodriguez finished with six first-half saves.
Rodriguez produced his seventh save in the 52nd minute before Ohio State doubled its lead on 55 minutes with Pechota providing for midfielder Ashton Bilow.
In the 63rd minute, Mustangs sophomore defender Conner Leber was whistled for a foul inside the penalty area and Wootton's resulting penalty was saved by Rodriguez. Wootton, however, knocked in the rebound to run Ohio State's lead to 3-0.
Cal Poly enjoyed two further opportunities to break through against Ohio State, but sophomore defender Sebastien Maza was stopped in the 61st minute before sophomore forward Drew Patterson was turned away in the 86th.
Cal Poly completes its three-game, season-opening road trip at Portland on Friday, Sept. 2. Kickoff from Merlo Field is 7 p.m.
