Mustangs Sustain Opening-Day Defeat versus Dayton

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three-second half goals from Dayton during an 11-minute span helped send the Cal Poly men's soccer program to a Thursday afternoon defeat as the Mustangs opened the 2022 regular season, a three-game road trip and Ohio State's Wolstein Classic at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium with 5-0 setback to the Flyers.
Junior goalkeeper Victor Rodriguez recorded seven saves in his first collegiate appearance for Cal Poly.
Cal Poly completes Wolstein Classic action on Sunday, Aug. 28 against Ohio State at 3 p.m. PT.
Held without a shot attempt for nearly 20 minutes, Cal Poly went down 1-0 in the 20th after Dayton senior Andy Sanchez set up fellow forward Gabriel Kringen.
Rodriguez maintained Cal Poly's one-goal deficit with a second save in the 24th minute as the Mustangs were outshot during the opening half, 12-2.
Forcing Rodriguez into another save in the 51st, Dayton doubled its lead on 54 minutes through forward Manny Day.
Sanchez returned in the 63rd minute to run Dayton's lead to 3-0 before defender Casper Svendby found the back of the net 91 seconds later and midfielder Seth Antwi completed the scoring in the 86th.
Cal Poly enjoyed its first shot on target in the 70th through Midfielder Andrew McGee. Mustangs midfielder Richie Garcia then struck the left post with a 78th-minute attempt before defenders Oscar Baudey (86th) and Conner Leber (87th) had shots turned away by Dayton goalkeeper Dario Caetano.
