Cal Poly Drops Final Exhibition to Santa Clara, 1-0

SAN LUIS OBISPO – An 86th-minute strike from Santa Clara forward Oladayo Thomas settled the Cal Poly men's soccer program's final preseason exhibition Saturday evening as the Mustangs dropped a 1-0 decision inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.

With Santa Clara held to just six shot attempts through the opening 86 minutes, Thomas broke the deadlock by taking a cross from forward Bar Hazut and firing into the top right corner of the Mustang net.

Cal Poly junior goalkeeper Victor Rodriguez (above) chalked up his lone save of the evening in the 32nd minute. Mustang sophomore Gabe Penner faced just two shots in 19 reserve minutes – include the game-winner from Thomas.

The Mustangs open the 2022 regular season with a Thursday, Aug. 25 matchup versus Dayton at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Cal Poly's season-opening, three game road trip continues on Sunday, Aug. 28 against the host Buckeyes.
