Cal Poly Splits Friday Doubleheader at UC San Diego
5/13/2022 5:27:00 PM | Softball
LA JOLLA – Visiting UC San Diego for the first time in 28 years and beginning its final three-game series of the season, the Cal Poly softball program opened a Friday doubleheader with a 6-2 setback to the Tritons. Cal Poly, however, captured game No. 2 as freshman righthander Kate Judy's (above) complete-game effort helped the Mustangs to a 3-2 victory.
With Friday's second-game victory, Cal Poly (19-28, 14-12) clinched its first winning Big West Conference season since 2014. Cal Poly and UC San Diego (26-26, 14-12) complete the three-game series and the 2022 regular season on Saturday, May 14 with a 1 p.m. matchup.
During Friday's opening matchup, Cal Poly stranded the initial of its six baserunners in the top of the first inning and UC San Diego produced the eventual decisive runs in the bottom half with a three-run effort highlighted by a two-run double from third baseman Keila Bosinger.
The Tritons returned in the third to add another run though a two-out, RBI single by left fielder Alexa Demarse before going up 6-0 in the fourth after shortstop Deena Pederson and second baseman Isabel Lavrov hit solo homers.
Offensively, Cal Poly was kept to just two hits through the opening five innings by Tritons righthander Jada Cecil (19-4). The Mustangs broke up Cecil's shutout in the sixth, however, as a two-out single to right center from senior designated player Lily Amos plated senior shortstop Maddie Amos.
The Mustangs added the game's final run with one down in the top of the seventh as sophomore catcher Kai Barrett brought home sophomore pinch hitter Sydney Frankenberger. Cecil then retired the next two Mustangs to close UC San Diego's 6-2 decision.
During Friday's second matchup, Cal Poly was limited to just one hit during the opening two innings before finding the game's opening run in the top of the third. With one down, freshman left fielder Jessica Clements followed a Barrett base hit with a single of her own before an error from UC San Diego right fielder Mikaila Pancino placed Mustangs at the corner bases. A passed ball from Demarse behind the plate then brought home Barrett for a 1-0 Mustangs lead.
In the circle for Cal Poly, Judy (7-13) stranded single UC San Diego baserunners to close to the first and third innings and two apiece to complete the second and fourth.
Cal Poly's lead preserved, the Mustangs furthered the advantage to 3-0 in the top half of the fifth as Maddie Amos delivered a two-run single to left center, bringing home Clements and senior center fielder Noellah Ramos.
UC San Diego cut its deficit to 3-2 during the bottom half of the fifth through designated player Clarissa Reynoso's two-run double. Judy, however, left pinch runner Mariah Melendez on third base to end the fifth before retiring the Tritons in order to cap the sixth.
Judy helped procure two immediate outs from UC San Diego during the bottom of the seventh before the Tritons placed two on. Judy, however, forced a game-ending fly out from Reynoso.
