FULLERTON – Held to one hit by Cal State Fullerton starting righthander Ellie Zellien to open a Saturday afternoon doubleheader and three-game series, the Cal Poly softball program dropped an 11-0, five-inning decision to the Big West Conference leading Titans. Cal Poly also sustained a five-inning, run-rule setback in game No. 2, falling 9-0.
During Saturday's opening matchup, Cal State Fullerton (33-16, 17-3) scored the eventual decisive run in the bottom half of the first inning with catcher Jessi Alcala singling down the right field line with one down to plate center fielder Megan Delgadill.
With Cal Poly (16-25, 11-9) held hitless once more in the top of the second by Zellien (1-0), Cal State Fullerton added three additional runs in the bottom half. With a one-out Mustang throwing error helping place two Titans in scoring position, shortstop Peyton Toto ran the lead to 3-0 with a single to left field. Alcala next plated Toto with a run-scoring single.
Cal Poly produced its lone hit in the top of the third as freshman left fielder Jessica Clements (above) singled with two down. The Mustangs, however, stranded a pair of baserunners and Cal State Fullerton enjoyed a five-run, bottom half highlighted by a three-run homer from designated player Deshea Hill.
The Titans finalized the scoring with a two-run fourth and the Mustangs stranded junior second baseman Xiara Diaz at third in the top of the fifth to close the opening matchup.
During Saturday's second game, Cal Poly was retired in order during the top of the first and Cal State Fullerton surged to a 2-0 advantage in the bottom half with Alcala and first baseman Daisy Munoz supplying run-scoring hits.
Sophomore first baseman Hailey Prahm collected the first of Cal Poly's three hits with two down in the second, following a walk from senior shortstop Maddie Amos with a double to right center. Cal Poly, however, stranded the pair in scoring position and Cal State Fullerton produced three more runs in the bottom of the second for a 5-0 cushion.
Cal Poly's best opportunity to break through against Cal State Fullerton starting righthander Myka Sutherlin (13-6) came during the third as senior center fielder Noellah Ramos followed a one-out Clements double with a single up the middle of the infield. Clements, however, was thrown at home and the Titans responded with two more runs in the bottom of the third to go up 7-0.
A two-run double from Titans left fielder Kika Ramirez in the bottom of the fourth then placed the matchup in run-rule territory.
