Cal Poly Falls in Sunday Series Finale at Cal State Fullerton

FULLERTON – The Cal Poly softball program cut an early deficit at Big West Conference leader Cal State Fullerton to four runs with a two-run fourth inning Sunday afternoon, but the Mustangs sustained their third run-rule defeat in as many series games with a 10-2, six-inning loss at Anderson Family Field.
Via Sunday's loss, Cal Poly (16-26, 11-10) slipped seven games behind Cal State Fullerton (34-16, 18-3) in the Big West standings and – with six regular season games remaining – the Mustangs were officially eliminated from title contention.
Cal Poly resumes action and closes its 18-game home schedule when hosting UC Davis for a three-game, May 6-7 series at Bob Janssen Field. Series action gets underway with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday, May 6.
During Sunday's matchup, Cal Poly stranded a baserunner in the top of the first inning and the Titans took the lead at the first opportunity for the third successive game through first baseman Daisy Munoz's two-run homer.
Cal State Fullerton then ran the lead to 5-0 in the second. With the Titans first loading the bases with one down against Cal Poly starting freshman righthander Kate Judy (6-14), shortstop Peyton Toto produced a run-scoring groundout. Right fielder Antuanett Dean next scored on a passed ball before catcher Jessi Alcala supplied an RBI single.
Stranding six baserunners Sunday, Cal Poly left two on to cap the top of the third and the Titans responded in the bottom half with left fielder Bailey Wallace bunting to bring home third baseman Hannah Becerra.
Facing a 6-0 deficit entering the fourth, Cal Poly took two runs back as first baseman Hailey Prahm (above) singled to plate fellow sophomore Juju Sargent with one down before pinch runner Ellie Yamashita scored on a Titans fielding error.
Cal State Fullerton, however, added two runs in the fifth before a one-out, two-run, walk-off Toto homer during the sixth cemented the run-rule decision.
