Mustangs Fall in Road Contest at No. 2 Stanford Wednesday

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Graduate guard Nikola Kovacikova scored a team-high 11 points as Cal Poly, who held No. 2 Stanford to its lowest point total of the season, fell to the Cardinal Wednesday 80-43 inside Maples Pavilion.Maddie Willett and Oumou Toure made threes on consecutive possessions. The Cardinal then went on a 15-0 run broken by an and-one layup from Lichtie with a tenth of a second left to make it 42-17 at halftime.
Kovacikova opened the second half with a jumper on Cal Poly's first possession, two of her 11 points in the quarter. The Mustangs had their strongest quarter in the third, scoring 16 points. After Stanford made it 47-19, the Mustangs went on a 5-0 to trim the deficit to 23.
Cal Poly will head to the Central Valley to take on Fresno State Friday at 6 p.m. inside the Save Mart Center.
Kovacikova was 4-5 from the field and 3-3 from three. Sophomore guard Annika Shah, playing in her hometown, finished with eight points and two assists. Freshman forward Sierra Lichtie added six points.
Coming into Wednesday's game, no team this season had held the Cardinal (5-0) to fewer than 86 points and no team had been closer than 38 before the Mustangs (1-2) did both Wednesday evening.
After Stanford took a 6-2 lead to open the game, Shah hit back-to-back threes to give Cal Poly and 8-6 lead. From there Stanford scored 17 straight points to end the quarter.
