Cal Poly Comes Up Short Thursday Evening at San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO – Senior forward Alimamy Koroma (above) scored a team leading 15 points and the Cal Poly men's basketball program led San Francisco at halftime before being kept to just 21 second-half points in a 60-48 setback Thursday evening inside War Memorial at The Sobrato Center.
Koroma added a game high eight rebounds for Cal Poly (1-1), which led 2022 NCAA Tournament qualifier San Francisco (2-0) at halftime, 27-24, after limiting the Dons to a 25.9 (7-for-27) percent field half shooting mark. The Dons, however, closed the matchup by outscoring Cal Poly, 36-21.
Cal Poly, which received eight points from graduate guard Chance Hunter, kept San Francisco to a 15.4 (4-for-26) percent three-point mark.
Following an eight-day break, Cal Poly completes a two-game road trip at Stanford on Friday, Nov. 18. Tip time from Maples Pavilion is 7:30 p.m.
During Thursday's matchup, Cal Poly trailed 10-5 after six minutes before keeping the Dons to just three field goals during the final 14 minutes of the half. After handing the Mustangs a 20-19 advantage with two free throws four minutes from the break, Koroma added three layups down the stretch before a free throw from sophomore guard Aidan Prukop stretched Cal Poly's lead to 27-24 at half.
Into the second half, San Francisco recorded the first three buckets to spur an 12-2 run and hand Cal Poly a 36-29 deficit with 15 minutes to play. Junior forward Bryan Penn-Johnson stemmed San Francisco's run with a dunk and Cal Poly still trailed, 40-33, with seven minutes to play before Hunter sank a three-pointer and junior guard Camren Pierce knocked down a free throw to cut the deficit to a single possession.
San Francisco, however, responded with a 13-6 run to claim the night's first double-digit lead at 53-43. Cal Poly failed to close within single digits the remainder of the game.
