SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Junior guard Maddie Vick led all players with 15 points but just one made field goal in the fourth quarter cost the Cal Poly women's basketball team, falling to CSUN at home Saturday afternoon, 54-45.
Vick's 15 points are the sixth time this season she has scored in double figures. She also grabbed five rebounds while playing 39 minutes. Graduate forward Kirsty Brown finished with eight points and seven rebounds while junior forward Julia Nielacna also added eight points.
The Mustangs (1-11, 0-3 BWC) made six threes while the Matadors were just 1-18 from distance. However, CSUN took advantage of Mustang turnovers as they turned 19 turnovers by Cal Poly into 26 points while the Mustangs scored just eight points off CSUN's 15 turnovers. CSUN also scored 32 of its points in the paint compared to 12 for Cal Poly.
The Matadors had a pair of players score double figures, led by guard Sydney Woodley's 13 points off the bench.
Cal Poly, which led for over 16 minutes of the game, got out to a 9-4 to begin the game, its largest lead of the game. However, CSUN finished the quarter on a 6-1 run to make it a 10-10 game heading into the second quarter.
With 9:07 left in the second quarter, a three knocked down by Vick followed by a Brown jumper 45 seconds later gave the Mustangs a 15-12 lead. Later in the quarter, a Vick layup with 1:57 left put Cal Poly ahead 22-19. They were held scoreless the rest of the quarter as CSUN scored four points during that span, including a layup at the buzzer to take a 23-22 lead into halftime.
Neither team held a lead of more than three points in the third quarter. With 2:10 left in the quarter, a Brown jumper tied it 36-36. Neither team scored the rest of the quarter until a buzzer beater layup by the Matadors' Jordyn Jackson with one second left gave them a 38-36 advantage going into the fourth quarter.
Cal Poly was just 1-12 from the field in the fourth quarter. While CSUN didn't shoot well from the field either in the fourth as they were 3-16, the Matadors went 10-15 from the free throw line in the quarter which proved to be the difference.
The Mustangs, who will play three of the next four games on the road, start that stretch next week with games at UC Riverside Thursday and at UC Davis Saturday.
