Cal Poly Splits Pair of Matches Friday at Utah Volleyball Classic

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Less than 48 hours after hosting its first home match of the season, the Cal Poly volleyball team was back on the court Friday in Salt Lake City for a pair of matches at the Utah Volleyball Classic. In the morning, the Mustangs fell to No. 19 Utah 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-16) before beating Utah Valley 3-0 (25-21, 29-27, 25-17) later in the day.
In the first match of the day against the No. 19 Utes (3-0), redshirt senior outside hitter Jamie Stivers led the Mustangs in kills with seven, hitting .300 for the match while also adding eight digs. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham and junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips each had five kills. Freshman outside hitter Annabelle Thalken, who got her first start of the season, added four kills.
The Utes held Cal Poly to a .126 hitting percentage for the match while they hit .287. Utah also had 10 service aces and 10 blocks compared to three and six for the Mustangs.
In the first set, Cal Poly took a 2-1 lead before Utah rattled off five straight points to go up 6-2. The Mustangs responded with three consecutive points to then cut the lead to one. With Utah leading 7-6, the Utes used a 7-2 run to take a 14-9 lead. The Utes extended their lead to as much as eight at 22-14 before going on to win it 25-17.
The second set was back-and-forth early on until, tied at 6, Utah went on an 8-1 run to go ahead 14-7. Cal Poly then scored three straight points to cut the lead to four at 14-10 and later cutting the Utes lead to as little as two at 16-14. However, that would be as close as the Mustangs got as from there Utah went on a 4-1 run to take a 20-15 lead. Ahead 21-17, the Utes scored four consecutive points to win the set 25-17.
In the third set, both teams traded small runs. With Cal Poly leading 4-3, Utah went on a 5-1 run to take an 8-5 lead before the Mustangs cut the lead to one after a 3-1 run. The Utes then pulled away with an 8-2 run to take a 17-10 lead and later leading by as many as 10 points before going on to win the set 25-16 to finish the match.

A few hours later, the Mustangs (2-4) returned to the Huntsman Center to take on Utah Valley University.
Cal Poly outhit the Wolverines (1-3) .278 to .184 while also having an advantage at the service line with seven compared to two for Utah Valley.
It was a balanced, team effort for Cal Poly. Tommi Stockham led the Mustangs in kills with 11. Jamie Stivers added nine kills with no errors to go with seven digs. Meredith Phillips also added nine kills while hitting .375 while also adding five blocks. Freshman middle blocker Kate Slack had a season-high eight kills, hitting .353 while Annabelle Thalken added six kills.
Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea dished out 35 assists while also collecting six kills and six digs. Freshman libero Peyton Dueck had a season-high 20 digs and a team-high four service aces.
Cal Poly came out firing in the first set, getting out to a 7-3 lead. The Wolverines cut the lead to two at 12-10 before the Mustangs scored three straight points to take a 15-10 lead. Up 17-14, Cal Poly pulled away after scoring three consecutive points to go up by six before going on to win the set 25-21.
With the Mustangs leading 5-4 in the second set, Cal Poly went on a 4-1 run to extend its lead to 9-5. Trailing 12-8, Utah Valley used a 6-1 run to take a 14-13 lead. Down 14-13 later in the set, a 7-2 run allowed Cal Poly to regain the lead 20-16. With Cal Poly winning 24-19 and looking to take the set, the Wolverines scored six unanswered points to have set point at 25-24. The Mustangs then scored to tie it before Utah Valley scored the next point to have set point again. The teams traded points back-and-forth before, tied at 27, Dueck hit consecutive aces to win the set 29-27.
Similar to the first set, Cal Poly again got out to a hot start to begin the third by going ahead 5-1. Up 7-5, the Mustangs pulled away with a 9-3 run to give them a 16-8 lead. Utah Valley cut the lead to as little as three at 19-16 before the Mustangs finished the set on a 6-1 run to win it 25-17 to finish the sweep.
Cal Poly will wrap up the Utah Volleyball Classic with one more match on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. PT against No. 22 San Diego.
