Cal Poly Outlasts San Diego State in Four-Set Thriller at UC Davis Invitational

DAVIS, Calif. — Emma Fredrick racked up double-digit kills (17) for the third time this season as Cal Poly volleyball opened the UC Davis Invitational with a four-set victory (25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 26-24) over San Diego State on Friday afternoon at the University Credit Union Center.
In a see-saw affair that featured 27 ties and nine lead changes, Cal Poly (3-1) outhit, killed, and blocked the Aztecs. The Mustangs hit .177 as a team with 53 kills, while their defense limited SDSU to a .172 hitting percentage.
In both the first and second sets, the Mustangs fought from behind at times but always managed to come back for the win. San Diego State (3-2) came out strong in the third set to force a fourth, but the Mustangs once again rallied late in the tightest frame of the match to seal the victory in extra points.
Senior middle blocker Breklyn Pulling was all over the net with a match-high six blocks to go with eight kills on .333 hitting, while outside hitter Emma Fredrick posted her own match-best 17 kills and added 11 digs, tied for second on the team.
Kayla Murdoch was the other Mustang to reach double-digit kills (11), while Kendall Beshear added eight as well. Beshear shined even more on the defensive side, tallying a team-leading 16 digs.
With Alexis Haury dishing out 39 assists and contributing nine points on two aces, four blocks, and five kills, the Mustangs were well set.
Cal Poly continues play at the UC Davis Invitational on Saturday, September 5, with a noon matchup against the host Aggies. It will be the first non-conference meeting between the two programs in nearly 20 years, since UC Davis officially joined the Big West in 2007. The match will be streamed on Mountain West+.
