Mustangs Drop Five Set Non-Conference Thriller to UC Davis Rally

DAVIS, Calif. — Facing off as non-conference opponents for the first time in nearly 20 years, since UC Davis transitioned to Division I, the Mustangs and Aggies battled through a five-set nail biter, with the home squad edging Cal Poly 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 25-23, 23-25, 12-15).
The Mustang volleyball team (3-2) once again outperformed its opponent offensively, hitting .184, seven points higher than UC Davis, while committing just 20 errors compared to the Aggies' 31.
Cal Poly weathered several major runs by UC Davis throughout the match and answered with back-to-back set wins of their own, though they dropped the opening frame to the Aggies.
In the fourth set, the Mustangs held a confident 21-19 lead before UC Davis capitalized on home-court momentum with a five-point run to close the frame, forcing a decisive fifth set.
After the Aggies stormed to a 10-4 start in the final set, the Mustangs regrouped once again, unleashing a five-point run that prompted two UC Davis timeouts. The home squad, however, regained its composure and fought back to secure the final points of the match.
Kendall Beshear recorded her second double-double of the season, pacing both the offense and defense with team-highs of 12 kills and 14 digs.
On the defensive end, Charlotte Kelly helped hold the Aggies to a .177 hitting percentage, tying her personal single-game best with seven total blocks. This matched her previous mark, set in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional first round against USC.
Fifth-year pin Kayla Murdoch complemented Beshear on the attack, tallying 11 kills on a .226 hitting percentage while adding four blocks.
The Mustangs next head out of state for the second time in three weeks, traveling to Bloomington, Indiana for a two-match tourney against the host Hoosiers (Sept. 10, 4 p.m. PT) and Eastern Illinois (Sept. 11, 10 a.m. PT).
