Cal Poly Falls to No. 22 San Diego in Finale of Utah Classic

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — Redshirt senior outside hitter Jamie Stivers had a season-high 12 kills and freshmen outside hitters Annabelle Thalken and Amy Hiatt each set career-highs for kills but the Cal Poly volleyball team fell to No. 22 San Diego Saturday 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-19) in its final match of the Utah Volleyball Classic.
Stivers was extremely efficient on the offensive attack, hitting at a .391 clip on 23 swings. Thalken and Hiatt each had seven kills apiece to set their career-highs. Thalken also added four blocks on the afternoon. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea had 32 assists while freshman libero Peyton Dueck led the Mustangs (2-5) with 13 digs.
The Toreros (3-2) hit .302 for the match as a team, committing 10 attack errors compared to 12 for Cal Poly who hit .157. San Diego also had 10 blocks compared to six for the Mustangs.
San Diego got out to a 7-3 lead to begin the first set. Cal Poly cut the lead to two twice at 8-6 and 9-7 but that is as close as they would get it to the rest of the set. With San Diego leading 13-9, the Toreros used 5-1 run to go up by eight at 18-10 before going on to win the set 25-15 thanks in part to USD hitting .458.
In the second set, the Mustangs found themselves down 6-3 before coming back to tie it at 8. With the Toreros leading 14-13 later in the set, San Diego pulled away with a 9-3 run to go ahead 23-16. They went on to win the set 25-18.
With Cal Poly leading 5-4 in the third set, San Diego went on a 10-1 run to go up 14-6. The Mustangs cut into the lead with a 4-1 run of their own to make it 15-10. Cal Poly got it to as close as 17-13 before the Toreros used a 7-1 run to go up 24-14. Still fighting, Mustangs then scored the next five points, with four of them coming via Amy Hiatt, before a San Diego kill finished the set 25-19.
Cal Poly will look to bounce back next weekend when it heads to Malibu for a pair of matches against ranked opponents. The Mustangs will face No. 11 Washington on Saturday, September 11 at 6 p.m. followed by No. 21 Pepperdine on Sunday, September 12 at 5 p.m.
