9/11/2021 8:55:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
MALIBU, Calif. — Redshirt senior outside hitter Jamie Stivers recorded her third double-digit kill match and second double-double of the season but the Cal Poly volleyball team fell short of upsetting No. 9 Washington, falling 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 23-25, 25-14) Saturday in its opening match of the Pepperdine Asics Classic in Malibu.
Stivers had a team-high 12 kills, hitting .306 while also adding 12 digs. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Amy Hiatt tied her season-high in kills with seven to go with a career-high two blocks. Junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips had a match-high six blocks while also adding five kills. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea had 34 assists, seven digs and three blocks while freshman libero Peyton Dueck led the Mustangs (2-6) in digs with 14.
Led by three returning AVCA All-Americans from their run to the final four last season, the No. 9 Huskies (5-1) were led by Claire Hoffman who had a match-high 17 kills. Samantha Drechsel had a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs. Their All-American setter Ella May Powell also had a double-double with 40 assists and 16 digs.
Washington got out to a 5-1 lead to begin the first set. Cal Poly followed with a 4-1 run to cut the lead to one before the Huskies pushed their lead to 14-9 after an 8-4 run. The Mustangs were able to get to as close as 15-13 before a 5-1 run by the Huskies gave them a 20-14 lead. Up 23-17, Washington scored consecutive points to win the set 25-17.
Washington once again got out a fast start in the second set with a 7-3 lead. They extended their lead to 11-5 before three straight points by the Mustangs cut it to 11-8. However, that is as close as Cal Poly would get thanks in part to the Huskies hitting .367 for the set. Ahead 17-13, Washington finished the set on an 8-2 run to win it 25-15.
Cal Poly found a rhythm on both sides of the net in the third set, hitting .263 while holding the Huskies to a .049 hitting percentage. After Washington took a 6-3 lead to start, the Mustangs scored three straight to tie it. Tied at 7, the teams traded 3-0 runs before a 7-2 run by Cal Poly put them ahead 17-12. With the Mustangs up 20-16, the Huskies scored four unanswered to tie it at 20. Tied at 23, a Phillips kill followed by a block by an Avalon DeNecochea and Phillips block sealed the set for Cal Poly 25-23.
Similar to the first three sets, Washington started the fourth by getting out to a 6-3 lead. Up 7-5, the Huskies scored five unanswered points to go up 12-7. The Mustangs fought back down 14-7 by scoring five straight points of their own to trim the lead to 14-12. Following a Huskie timeout, Washington went on an 8-1 run to pull away from Cal Poly and go up 22-13 before going on to win the set 25-14.
The Mustangs tough non-conference schedule continues Sunday in Malibu when they face No. 22 Pepperdine at 5 p.m. This will be their fifth match already this season against a Top 25 team. The Waves are 6-1 and also lost to Washington 3-1 Saturday. Sunday's match will be live streamed and will also have live stats. Links for both can be found on the volleyball schedule page.
