IRVINE, Calif. — Caroline Walters' Cal Poly volleyball program stayed perfect in Big West play once again Friday night, closing out UC Irvine in four sets (25-20, 17-25, 25-20, 25-16) at the Bren Events Center.
The Anteaters (9-13, 7-4 Big West) hung around early in each of the first three sets, with the opening frame alone featuring 13 ties, but Cal Poly's floor coverage and presence at the net proved to be the difference. UCI hit just .048 in the third set and .206 in the fourth, unable to sustain momentum after taking the second.
The Mustangs (15-6, 11-0 Big West) never trailed in the fourth after dropping the second frame, pulling away late behind an unstoppable attack from every direction.
Cal Poly focused its offense as opposed to the Sam Callahan-Aveya Stone rotation from recent matches, and ran through transfer setter Alexis Haury, who dished out an incredible 47 assists while adding nine digs and a pair of kills.
Leading the offensive side of the net, Emma Fredrick enjoyed another high-flying performance with 17 kills on 47 attempts, while Kendall Beshear matched her with 17 kills of her own to go along with 12 digs and five block assists.
Breklyn Pulling continues to earn back more playing time after recovering from her year-long injury and picked up 10 kills and four block assists, and middle blocking partner Charlotte Kelly added 11 kills and three block assists of her own.
Defensively, the Mustangs matched the Anteaters with 65 digs apiece, Cal Poly's second-best team total of the season, with Fredrick (15) and freshman Noe Vanacht (12) leading the backcourt effort alongside Beshear's double-double. Cal Poly's blocking was a factor throughout, finishing with eight total blocks, including five block assists alone from Beshear.
Now at a whopping 11 straight Big West wins, the Mustangs remain three games above second-place Long Beach State (9-2) for rights to the Big West Championship's top seed, as Cal Poly currently owns the head-to-head tiebreaker.
This is just the second time in program history Cal Poly has earned at least eleven straight wins to start the Big West slate. This is the Mustangs' best start in Big West play since 2017, which was the first 11-plus win season when the program notched its singular perfect conference slate (16-0) in its history, under now-associate head coach Sam Crosson.
The Big West record for conference wins in a season was set by Hawai'i in 2022 when the Rainbow Wahine went 19-1. There have been multiple unbeaten conference runs in the Big West's long history, but the Mustangs are chasing the coveted 18-0, only accomplished six times for the highest unbeaten win total.
