COMPLETE 2021-22 SCHEDULE
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Highlighted by 16 regular season home games, the Cal Poly women's basketball program announced its 2021-22 schedule Tuesday unveiling a 29-game slate featuring the return of its Thanksgiving week home tournament.
"Last year we opened the unusual COVID impacted season with eventual NCAA National Champions, Stanford," Mustang 25th year head coach Faith Mimnaugh said. "This preseason also promises to challenge us as we prepare for our tough conference opponents. This year we open at Santa Clara, a team we faced last year with two exciting contests. Following that road trip, we host national powerhouse Louisville. Louisville will be the highest ranked women's basketball team to ever compete in Mott Athletics Center during my tenure at Cal Poly."
Despite the loss of its top-two scorers from last season, Cal Poly returns nine players from last year's team including guard Maddie Willett who was third on the team in scoring last season at 7.8 points per game and senior forward Kirsty Brown who was fourth on the team in scoring at 6.7 points and second in rebounding at 5.6 per game.
The Mustangs will be joined by eight newcomers this year. That includes six true freshmen and two Division I transfers.
"I am excited about the challenge and love how the team has responded in their preparation," Mimnaugh said about this year's team. "Led by seniors Kirsty Brown, Maddie Vick, Hannah Scanlan, Zoe Stachowski and Maddie Willett, our talented incoming players have great examples to follow in work ethic, character, and positive role modeling."
"Our newcomers are challenging for playing time, so every practice is highly competitive and so much fun to watch and coach," Mimnaugh added. "All practice players are learning, growing, and playing connected basketball. This could be one of the deepest squads I've had the pleasure of coaching."
Cal Poly finished 13-11 overall and 8-8 in Big West play last season, finishing in sixth place in the regular season conference standings. In the Big West Conference Tournament, the Mustangs beat Long Beach State 61-60 in the quarterfinals before falling to UC Irvine in the semifinals.
The Mustangs, 118-58 at home since 2008, will host Cal State San Bernardino for an exhibition game on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 12 p.m. at Mott Athletics Center.
Cal Poly opens the regular season on the road at Santa Clara on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 5 p.m.
They begin a four-game homestand starting with perennial powerhouse Louisville coming to Mott Athletics Center on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 5 p.m. Last season, the Cardinals finished 26-4 overall and were a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, making it to the Elite Eight for the sixth time in program history. One of Louisville's top players is redshirt senior Kianna Smith, daughter of Cal Poly men's basketball head coach John Smith. Last season, Smith was second on the team in scoring at 11.4 points per game and is the leading scorer returning for Louisville.
The Mustangs will then host their 14th annual #ShareSLO Holiday Beach Classic from Nov. 26-27 that will also feature St. Thomas (Minn.) and Montana State. Cal Poly will face St. Thomas on Friday, Nov. 26 at 12 p.m. They will then take on Montana State on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 2:30 p.m. St. Thomas will be making its Division I debut in 2021-22 after making the jump from Division III. Montana State was 17-7 last season and finished third in the Big Sky.
The following week, the Mustangs will host two more home games starting with Nevada on Thursday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. followed by Denver on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m.
"Thanksgiving week and the week following, Mustang fans can make up for all the games they missed last year, as we host our annual Thanksgiving tournament against Big Sky opponent Montana State and Summit League member St. Thomas," coach Mimnaugh said. "The following week we host Mountain West foe, Nevada and another Summit League member, Denver."
After playing two road games against Northern Arizona University and the PAC-12's Cal, Cal Poly will wrap up non-conference play hosting Cal Baptist on Tuesday, Dec. 21 at 1 p.m. Last season, Cal Baptist had one of its best seasons in program history, finishing 26-1 and making it to the third round of the WNIT.
"Add in a talented Northern Arizona team, a Pac 12 opponent- Cal; and Cal Baptist, a team that had only one loss last season, went undefeated in the WAC and progressed to the third round of the WNIT, and we have an aggressive learn by doing preseason experience," Mimnaugh added.
Big West play begins Thursday, Dec. 30 at Long Beach State. The first home conference game will be on Thursday, Jan. 6 against Central Coast foe UC Santa Barbara.
2020-21 Big West champion UC Davis comes to Mott on Thursday, Feb. 17 and returns reigning Big West Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference performer Sage Stobbart.
Following the 20-game conference schedule, which concludes March 5 at UC San Diego, the Big West Tournament will be held March 8-12 in Henderson, Nev. It will be held at the Dollar Loan Center which is set to be completely build in February of 2022 and will be the first event held at the arena.
