Cal Poly Volleyball Cruises in Sweep Over Texas A&M Corpus Christi Saturday

TEMPE, Ariz. — Behind double-digit kill efforts from a pair of players, the Cal Poly volleyball team cruised to a three-set sweep over Texas A&M Corpus Christi (25-8, 25-19, 25-17) Saturday in its final match of the Sun Devil Volleyball Classic to earn its first victory of the season.
The Mustangs (1-2) were stellar on both sides of the net, hitting .300 for the match on offense while holding the Islanders (0-3) to just a .022 hitting percentage while also collecting nine blocks. Cal Poly also side-outed at a 62-percent clip.
Redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham led Cal Poly with 12 kills, her most so far this season, while also adding three digs and two service aces. Junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips had one of the most efficient matches of her career, finishing with 11 kills on zero attack errors and hitting .688. She also was a force at the net with a team-high seven blocks. Redshirt senior Jamie Stivers added eight kills without an attack error while also contributing six digs and a pair of aces. Junior setter Avalon DeNecochea dished out 24 assists to go along with six digs, five kills, and four blocks. Defensively, junior defensive specialist Lea Ungar had a team-high 11 digs while freshman libero Peyton Dueck had 10 digs.
The Islanders opened up the first by scoring the first four points before the Mustangs answered back with three straight points. Trailing 6-3, Cal Poly caught fire and scored nine consecutive points before Texas A&M Corpus Christi scored again. From there, the Mustangs scored 12 straight points to take a 24-7 lead before winning the set 25-8. For the set, Cal Poly hit .545, its highest in a set this season while holding the Islanders to a -.190 hitting percentage.
The second set was back-and-forth early. Tied at 3, the Mustangs went on a 4-1 run to take a 7-4 lead. With Cal Poly leading 9-6, Texas A&M Corpus Christi scored four unanswered points to go ahead 10-9 before the Mustangs tied it. Tied at 11, Cal Poly used a 6-1 run to pull ahead 17-12. The Islanders cut the lead to as little as 21-17 before the Mustangs scored three straight points and eventually went on to win the set 25-19.
In the third set, Cal Poly got out to a 5-2 lead before Texas A&M Corpus Christi responded to tie it at 7. From there, the Mustangs scored five consecutive points to take a 12-7 lead. They extended their advantage to as much as seven at 16-9 before the Islanders were able to get it back to 16-15. Cal Poly pulled away with an 8-1 run to take a 24-16 lead before going on to win it 25-17 and complete the sweep.
The Mustangs will now get ready to host their first match at Mott Athletics Center since Nov. 23, 2019 when they welcome in Texas A&M on Wednesday, September 1 at 7 p.m. Cal Poly will be looking to extend its 32 match home win streak, the longest active streak in the NCAA. Fans are allowed to attend. However, they must show proof of vaccination and wear a mask at all times inside the arena.
