9/2/2021 12:30:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After not seeing volleyball at Mott Athletics Center for 648 days, fans were treated to a thrilling first match back Wednesday night that saw the Cal Poly volleyball team fall in its home opener to Texas A&M 3-2 (19-25, 29-27, 24-26, 25-20, 15-11).
The loss is the first at Mott Athletics Center since Oct. 28, 2016 and ends the Mustangs' (1-3) run of 32 consecutive wins at home and the nation's longest active home winning streak.
Cal Poly was led on the night in kills by junior middle blocker Meredith Phillips with a career-high 14. She also added six blocks. Redshirt senior outside hitter Jamie Stivers notched a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs to go with six blocks and a pair of service aces. Redshirt freshman outside hitter Tommi Stockham added 12 kills while freshman libero Peyton Dueck led the team in digs with 19.
The Aggies (2-2) meanwhile also had three players score double-digit kills. Lauren Davis led Texas A&M with 19, Morgan Christon had 18 kills and eight digs, and Treyaunna Rush added 10 kills.
The Mustangs were able to take the first set thanks in part to getting out to a 10-3 lead. The Aggies cut the lead later in the set to as little as four points at 17-13. However from there, Cal Poly was again able to get its lead back up to seven points at 24-17 before going on to win it 25-19.
The second set was back-and-forth throughout. Tied at 11, the Mustangs scored four straight points to go ahead 15-11 before Texas A&M responded with a 6-2 run to tie it at 17. Cal Poly had set point on three occasions. With the Mustangs leading 27-26, an attack error by Cal Poly, followed by an Aggie ace then a kill won the set for Texas A&M 29-27.
Similar to the second set, the third set was also close from start to finish. With Cal Poly leading 5-4, the Aggies used an 8-2 run to go up 12-7. The Mustangs then went on a 7-2 run to tie it at 14. Tied at 24 later in the set, a Phillips kill followed by a block by both Stivers and Phillips won the set for Cal Poly 26-24.
In the fourth set, the Mustangs scored the first four points before Texas A&M scored the next four to even it up. Leading 15-13, the Aggies went on a 5-2 run to take a 20-15 lead. Cal Poly cut it to as little as four five different times from that point but couldn't get any closer as Texas A&M won the set 25-20 to force a deciding fifth set.
The Mustangs scored the first two points of the fifth set before the Aggies scored the next three. With Cal Poly ahead 7-6, Texas A&M jumped ahead 13-7 after scoring seven straight points. Still fighting, the Mustangs were able to get it back to as close as 14-11 before an Aggie kill won them the set and the match 15-11.
Cal Poly will look to bounce back this weekend as the Mustangs will travel to Salt Lake City for a three-match tournament hosted by the University of Utah. They will take on the No. 19 Utes on Friday at 9 a.m. PT followed by Utah Valley later that day at 3:30 p.m. PT. They will then wrap up the tournament by facing No. 22 San Diego at 3:30 p.m. PT.
